Al Gore Running His Mouth In Saudi Arabia

Mon Feb 13, 2006 4:06 pm

JIDDAH, Saudi Arabia — Former Vice President Al Gore told a mainly Saudi audience on Sunday that the U.S. government committed "terrible abuses" against Arabs after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, and that most Americans did not support such treatment.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,184624,00.html

First off, even if his claims are true is this stuff a former American leader should me spouting in the ME, especially these days?

"indiscriminately rounded up, often on minor charges of overstaying a visa or not having a green card in proper order, and held in conditions that were just unforgivable."

Uh, didn't 19 men on overstayed visas wreak havoc here a few years ago? And I can assure Mr. Gore that these prisoners were held in much better conditions than I would be if I wound up in a Saudi prison.

Your thoughts?

It's an AP article on a Fox web site. I was ready to search for another source . . . but, I'll settle for AP.

With the exception of the babble about overstaying visas and this line of bull . . .
"I do want you to know that it does not represent the desires or wishes or feelings of the majority of the citizens of my country."
. . . I don't think he did so terribly bad. I can't find an anyone that doesn't think overstayed Visa's and a broken immigration system isn't a problem. I can't seem to find anyone that thinks just leaving it along isn't a problem. I can't find anyone that thinks arresting and deporting someone with a worn out (or no) Visa is a problem.

He made decent points about the current Iranian Nuclear Situation and . . .

Gore complained of "endemic hyper-corruption" among Tehran's religious and political elite and asked Arabs to take a stand against Iran's nuclear program.

. . . he was correct here.

Seems relatively harmless to me.

True. And I'll give him credit there.

Such a nice guy to talk like an Al Qaeda recruiter in the country which is the source for much of the problem. Just think if he were president... Somehow I think that September 11th would not have been the only attack the US would have suffered.

One needs to remember that theirs is a different culture. They do not respect apologists or people who do not show resolve.

agreed. and god only knows how many of Saddam's terrorists or nuke missiles would have hit us by now as well.  sarcastic

Truth is, there is no difference between how either party would stop terrorist attacks. The only difference lies in what other powers that government would declare for itself in the name of "fighting terrorism."

I'm driving at domestic spying, and a horribly inefficient, unnecessary and expensive war in Iraq, neither of which have anything to do with terrorism.

Pathetic??? Hardly. I rarely see eye to eye with you but that doesn't mean I dismiss you all together. 'Pathetic' would be flaming Al Gore no matter what he says because we're not from the same camp.

And even though you quoted this:

Quoting Checkraiser (Thread starter):

you didn't really address it. I won't go as far to call him an Al-Qaeda recruiter or a commie, but why on earth would you want to stir up even more anti-American sentiment in this region? He should know better, especially considering the job he applied for a few years ago.

Quoting HatTrick (Reply 10):

Not just 'righties,' but the politically ignorant as well. If you must attack Al Gore's character (or lack thereof  duck  ) there are certainly other, better points to raise.

he wasnt stirring it up he was apologizing for american abuse. trying to convince some arabs that all americans are not war mongering fools as some of the region may think they are. predictably the right [for right read the actual war mongering fools] will perceive this, as is evident in this thread. as being a left wing commie traitor.

''sendition! hang him! how dare he question our glorious leader! in doing so he is defaming our country which makes him a traitor!'' you have free speach, but if your left wing, dont you dare use it! or we`ll hang you for being a traitor!...

Mr. Bush created a lot more terrorirts and terrorist wannabes in the wake of 9/11; I doubt Gore could have caused such animosity if he tried.

Freedom of speech for Mr. Gore-who's got a problem with that?

This has nothing to do with his speech rights. I don't think anybody is calling for his hanging. Point is, why is he apologizing for jailing persons who commited crimes? Like it or not, being in this country illegally is a crime, and these criminals were detained and treated humanely. And how can he apologize for the way we treat our prisoners in a country were human rights are a joke?

Crap. Self-justifying crap, Charles. It's nothing you or I or anyone can ever know, so why make such a stupid comment? We'll never know, so it's a moot point. I bet we wouldn't have gone into Iraq, and had that particular albatross hanging around our necks, at the same time, right next door, Iran is becoming the country to reckon with.
