Chappelle Back From Africa, On The Actors Studio

Tue Feb 14, 2006 8:04 am

I just saw Chapelle in a 2 hour interview on the Actors Studio. I was fairly impressed, not the complete nutjob he portrays, he's actaully a down to earth and quite insightful.

Anyone catch it and what did you think?

Diddnt watch it and dont plan to. He's not funny and he's only acting like that because he went on this "spiritual journey" And his normal and down to earth? Well no one ever said he wasent a good actor.

He seems to be a real guy who understands where he's comfortable and where he feels out of control. I'd say it takes some internal strength to walk away from all that money and live life on your own terms.

I've heard through the "grapevine" (my niece owns a talent agency for comics in Hollywood) that Chappelle wanted out of his Comedy Partners (Comedy Central) contract. He found a "medical" clause as an out and played a mental breakdown scenario to get out of it. He was tired of Comedy Partners control over his material and may have a better offer @ HBO or Showtime.

No..no. You'd have to be CRAZY! That's the ploy.

Believe me...he's still receiving plenty of royalty checks.

My goodness, what profound insight coming from someone who never saw the show and never will. Such ignorance speaks volumes.

May I suggest a trip to Africa perhaps?

Kevin, not that I doubt you, but grapevines are exactly that. Of all the 'higher' calibre actors on the show, he showed a great presence. Further, if that is true, I m sure the tabloids have that covered! LOL

What I found even more interesting Ian was his background, very strong educational background.

Surely, that's why I qualified it.
However!.....If he shows up on HBO or Showtime.....you'll owe me Some BEERS!
(edited to quantify bet)

He's got to make a living and I'd bet that doing those shows are much less constricting than a regular show with deadlines and a long and tight production schedule.

That's the way he was raised. He was forced by his mother to get an education so that he could make his own decisions rather than have others force them on him.

I don't like alot of his comedy, but I do respect the person.

I'm afraid he may have overplayed his hand by leaving his Comedy Central show, a little while ago, so abruptly. If you were a producer, would you be comfortable hiring him for a leading role?

I saw him on the Actor's Studio and completely agree with you Mirrodie... I thoroughly enjoyed his interview as he is a lot more intelligent and insightful than one may think. I never really watched Chapelle's show, but really found him interesting to talk to. His appearance reminded me a lot of Jamie Foxx's where it got quite emotional talking about the industry/loss of family etc.
