US Firm Uses Hindu Goddess In Whiskey Advert.

Tue Feb 14, 2006 3:00 pm

Hindus in Europe have take objections to a new Southern Comfort whiskey advertisement which shows Goddess Durgaa astride a tiger cradling numerous bottles of booze in her hands.

I can only imagine it as i have not been able to find any link to it. I guess it would like quite amusing to see Goddess Durga with all the bottles of booze in her hand. I don't understand why some people can't find humor in the advert. and take it in their stride. I do not forsee any protests like the ones we have seen against the Danish cartoons.

good point to bring this up here...it'd be great to witness the discussion right after the cartoon controversy.
Nobody in India or Nepal will go about burning embassies, but lets see what impact it has on our European friends. I feel this thread will fizzle out as it is violence that evokes passion, not a passive discussion.

Durga is a badass party girl Goddess. She is one angry gal and represents destruction, anger, revenge. Given that she's seen with a bunch of skulls (those she's destroyed), I'm sure she's not above quaffing a few pegs of whiskey. If she were to be played by someone in films, it would be Bipasha Basu from Bollywood (another badass party girl), or Angelina Jolie.

Besides, all the Indian epics (the Ramayana, Mahabharata) as well as the Upanishadas, Vedas, mention the consumption of spirits by divine beings as well as their more earthly avatars.

Anyone who finds this offensive is an idiot who doesn't understand the representational quality of Indian Gods and Goddesses.

The only thing that I would find offensive is that Durga would never drink Southern Comfort. She is much more of a Jack Daniels or Skky Vodka kinda Goddess.

Embassies should begin checking their fire suppression systems at this time.  Yeah sure

Hi All,
I'm Hindu and find the whole thing pretty funny actually. If they want to boycott the Whiskey, fine with me, More for everyone else!

I hope you're being sarcastic there! Remember these are Hindus. I can see how people can find that offensive, but like many other things related to Hindu dieties, this will probably go away without much of a fuss.

To Hindus this is in poor taste, it is not blasphemy. So needless to say nothing will really come of this.

Hardly.

The leaders of this UK Hindu council tend to be a bunch of pudgy, diabetic accountants and barristers with a penchant for sweets (mostly Cadbury milk chocolate bars, KitKats, and Indian kulfi - a kind of creamy Indian ice cream), driving really boring cars (Honda Accords and the like), and drinking Johnny Walker Red Label scotch. Their idea of a good time is a sale at Boots.

Their relative boring demeanor can be disarming, however, and they've managed to convince advertisers in the past to quietly drop images that hurt them.

By the way, folks, here are the pictures - right from the website of the UK Hindu Council itself.

frankly I am not that liberal kind, so am put-off by the posters. But thats it!! I am not going about supporting any kind of nuisances/violence. My approach is that if you don't like it, then let your opinion be known, but don't inflame it.

I don't think the Sangh family would be too happy with it.

I surely am of the opinion that depicting someone else's God is bad taste (and is so very convenient).

Being a Christian, I don't feel much about this, so I really can't comment how a Hindu would feel. But I do feel bad when someone insults Christianity, but I never react to it.

Now that you mention, I have actually heard some people in India say that the hindu God Shiva is the one who introduced Marijuana to the world.

But I'm quite sure some Hindus will get quite offended if someone protrays Lord Shiva as a pot smokng junkie.

When I lived in India, I once went to a Hindu temple with a friend and his mother, where I witnessed all these Indian matrons dressed to the nines in diamonds and gold pouring cream over this stone phallic shaped object, namely the Shivalingam. Translated, it means "Shiva's dick." Emblematically, it signifies the creation of the universe, blah blah blah, because it also sits in a bowl called the "Yoni" (otherwise known as the "hoo ha" of Parvati, Shiva's heavenly consort). Well, being a brat and having heard of Lingams, I asked my friend's Mom if that was Shiva's dick. She was horrified, and forbade her son to ever hang out with this western-indian hybrid ever again. No big loss there.

So, Hinduism is really quite a cool religion with sexual symbols denoting all sorts of stuff (the big bang theory comes to mind). But alas many Hindus have become a pious, boring lot after centuries of puritanical Brahminism, Islamic incursions and the deadening morality of Victorian England.

The only person I ever heard of who swigged SC from the bottle was Janis Joplin. Was Janis anything like Durga?

Dunno what the other dude was complaining about-Wild Turkey 101 is pretty good sauce if you like bourbon. So what if Durga don't like it-more for us.

Indeed, I once read a book called 'Aghora', written by an American called Paul Svoboda. This guy had a tantric hindu guru in India, and the whole book is about sexual and other symbols in Hinduism. He explains the Shivalingam as being representative of the union of sexes, and Shiva as being the 'perfect man', ie one who can keep up his erection for an eternity without ever ejaculating (as that would end the erection and the union as a consequence).
So the Shivalingam represents Shiva's eternal erection and the yoni is Parvati's ...

Interesting book about a great religion!

Southern comfort apologies for the 'offensive' advertisement:

Southern Comfort Apologies for Offensive Poster

...on behalf of Brown-Forman and Southern Comfort, I extend our sincerest apologies for the inappropriate use of the image of the Hindu Goddess Durga. I also promise that we will do everything in our power to prevent any reoccurrence of this offense in the future.

Brown-Forman's Marketing, Advertising, and Promotional Policy prohibits the use of any religious imagery in the promotion of our beverage alcohol brands. The use of Goddess Durga was in violation of that policy. This violation occurred because of human error - our employees responsible for approving the promotion simply didn't know that the image was, in fact, a Hindu Deity. We have already taken steps
to amend our review process to ensure we don't make this mistake again.

The offensive use of the image of Durga was used in one bar in Athens, Greece. The image was removed on Monday night, February 13. We took this action within hours of first learning about the complaints against the use of the image.

The image was used on a two-dimensional wooden display featured in the front window of the bar. It was not a poster, nor were there any advertisements featuring the Goddess Durga. We make this point not to diminish the error we made, but rather because we believe it is important for you to know that the image was used in only one place - in the window of a bar in Athens, Greece.

...Thank you for taking time to read this explanation, and please accept my apology for the offensive and inappropriate use of the image of Goddess Durga in the promotion of Southern Comfort.

We will make every effort to ensure that the offending display is burned instead of thrown away.

Sincerely,

Philip J. Lynch

It seems protests through peaceful means are more effective then setting embassies on fire and recalling diplomatic staff. Indian Govt. did not have any role in this matter.

well said!! Somehow I always knew this is how it is going to end. These corporations rake up such controversies as a means of negative publicity. They also know the limit and apologize before controversies dies down or blows out of proportion. Although in case of Hindusim, it is the former that is more common.
