Need New Notebook: Suggestions Anyone?

Fri Feb 17, 2006 8:33 am

Hi guys,

In the not so far future, I will need a new notebook. My needs are quite specific and I thought that some of you guys could help me to improve my decision. Here is what I need:

A lightweight notebook with a focus on mobility and data storage. Graphics are secondary.

More specifically:
*must have a 12-13'' display
*must be below 2 kg's (4.4 pounds)
*must have >= 80 gb HDD
*must have >= 512 mb RAM
*must run >=4 h on battery
*must be able to run some windows based speciality software
*quality is more important than price
*should have an internal optical drive

A viable example would be the Samsung Q30+

Any other ideas???

Thanks, R.

I have the Acer Aspire 5002WLMi and its a great notebook. It has 1GB of memory, AMD Turion 64ML-30 processor, and of course, DVD, CD, burner and LAN.
Its a great computer, its light, battery works 4hrs in normal use (you can upgrade the battery though). It cost me $999, so its a great price-product ratio.
Hope this helped.

Any suitable notebook as long as it has a Toshiba sticker on it. Quality and price are both excellent.
Lead me not into temptation, I can find my own way there...

That Aspire is nowhere near light enough.

Get a Lenovo Thinkpad X60. Centrino Duo, 3-4 pounds, 12.1" display, can have internal optical. Quality machine.

I have a Futjitsu P1500 Lifebook. My hard drive's only 40gigs, but I'm sure there's an upgrade option. 3lbs with the battery in it- best part. Big grin Even a slot for my CF card.

I suggest you consider the IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad ThinkPad T-Series is about as good as it gets for Windows notebooks. Excellent laptop:

It weights 4.9 lbs so its ever slightly heavier than you want to carry, but you get the IBM touch:

- One of the best notebook keyboards ever made
- Dual tracking device, standard
- Biometric security, standard
- Keyboard illumination, standard
- Hard disk shock protection, standard
- Gigabit ethernet, standard
- Windows XP Professional, standard

As for performance specs:

- 14.1" screen
- 40-100 GB hard drive
- Intel Core Duo or Pentium M processor
- Mobile ATI Radeon Graphics
- DVD recordable drive

Price after options may vary, but the low end of the T-series starts at $1,299

Thinkpad, like said above. I have it, convinced my buddy to get it, the technology is great, it's a solid (physically strong and sturdy) laptop. Feels like you're holding a piece of metal when it's closed, though it's light.

I have the Toshiba M200 tablet PC, and love it. http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/...etpcfam&ccid=1291041&seg=SMB&sel=1

The Lenovo Tablet is awesome too; almost a pound lighter than the Toshiba. http://www-131.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/st...0&langId=-1&re=tpxtabfeat_tab-prod
