Do Your Sports Team Give You A Roller Coater Ride?

Mon Feb 20, 2006 7:30 pm

Ok, last night Manchester City (soccer team for those not in the know) could have easily wrapped up the game by half time, but no, never ones to take the easy route, they concede a goal and then get into injury time, have another injury to extend injury time, and only then, as the crowd are leaving, do they do the decent thing and actually put the ball in the net with the last action of the game. What is it about them?

Great goal by Micah Richards though. Hopefully he won't get whisked away by richer teams.

Any roller coaster there? All down I'd have thought.... well, apart from the European adventure.

I support the All Blacks, the New Zealand rugby union team. They are consistently the best team in the world, except for world cup time when they struggle to get past the semis. Imagine the surprised look on my girlfriends face as I fling bottles across the room in disgust. I'm usually a mild mannered chap.

In a different vein, the New Zealand cricket team on paper are not packed with stars. Yet occasionally they seem to pull out a great result. It's euphoria.

Either one of those teams will drive me to jump of a bridge at some time in the next few years.

As a fellow sufferer, I just knew what was going to happen after about 20 minutes when they stil hadn't scored.

I was chatting to my Dad after the game, and he was telling me (as he always does!) that they've always been like that, ever since he first stood on the terraces in 1946.

And they have too. The only side ever to win the league title and follow it up with relegation. Relegation despite being the leading scorers in the division too  banghead .

To have a player score 6 goals in an FA Cup game - and lose. Only City could do that.

I don't know why it is that clubs have traits that seem to last for decade after decade. City have always managed to shoot themselves in the foot in a way that no other club manages. It's really strange.

Though it does mean that City fans have a sense of humour and irony unmatched by any other club. They have to.

Like Newcastle Utd destined nver to win anything you mean Big grin

Does Plymouth Argyle give me a rollercoaster ride ? Erm not exactly - they're never that exciting. Currently on an upward curve in the Championship though. Seems like we'll be safe well before the end of the season which is a bit of a novelty.

Which reminds me of my own club, VfB Stuttgart...sounds so right, so fitting!!

...and no, Rollercoaster is not even remotely the right word to describe what this frigging club has put me through in the last few decades in general and this season in particular!!!
I know it's only VfB but I like it!

I was thinking about you just the other day, Andreas, watching your side put up a quite remarkably inept display against Middlesbrough in the UEFA Cup. They only started playing with 2 minutes left.

In Brazil, the ongoing joke is that SC Corinthians supporters are sufferers because of this exact reason. Last season, they could have clinched the league title with about 4 matchdays left and they waited until the last matchday to finally secure the title. In many championship matches, they have won in overtimes, with goals in injury time and the whole lot. I guess they think it's just more exciting. The funny thing is the team has been through about 3-4 different administrations (higher ups, not coaches and all, the Brazilian league is notorious for multiple coaching changes in the same team throughout the year, right now Corinthians' coach is threatened to be fired because the team isn't doing too well, but the man just brought home the cup last year and won their first Libertadores, SA's CL, match!) in the last 20-odd years and everytime it's the same roller coaster ride.
Oh no, she's getting impatient! Take a stab at it!

The New York Mets are a roller coaster ride.

Here is a example of a game last year.

Pedro Martinez was pitching against the Padres and was 5 outs away from not only winning the game but he was 5 outs away from pitching a no hitter (the first in Mets history). Not only did he not get the no hitter, he and the Mets lost the game!

In the 8th inning Antonio Perez tripled off the center field wall, the Mets center fielder Gerald Williams could of caught the ball but he misplays the ball BADLY, it ends up as a double. Next batter was Jayson Werth who hits a game winning 2 run home run.

Michigan basketball at present. Has good streaks and bad streaks.

Yep, my Buffs pounded the 19th ranked team in the country Oklahoma 84-75 at home this time last week, our biggest win of the season by far, then we went on the road to play Kansas State and got our asses handed to us, losing by 12 to the Wildcats, whom we had beaten earlier in the season and had lost 5 of their last 6 before we came in...so sad...
