yes, I'm pretty sure that if that's the only way to survive you would eat anything, only hope there's some salt nearby.

I haven't read or seen 'Alive'. I'm not sure. I would definately not kill the person but if they had already died of starvation I might, it would all depend on the chances of me getting out of this situation alive. If there is absolutely no hope, then whats the point of keeping yourself alive for a couple of weeks.

And where would you start? I think I would start with the thighs, I would rather eat a dead bloke than a woman, it wouldn't seem right somehow to eat something that has brought me such pleasure, all males are potential enemies so I could handle that,

I would also go for the big muscle groups, like the back and the upper legs. And you're right, I wouldn't eat a woman.

I don't think we can say we wouldn't unless we're in that situation - a desperate, life-or-death situation. So, I probably would.

OK so we've established that most of us probably would eat them.

So the next question is... assuming that you have a stove as well, do you cook them or eat them raw?

Why stop with just cooking on a stove top? as long as we've got a stove let's just say we have a frypan aswell, and assuming the victim is from a western country there's a better than average chance that there'd be some fat to cook with, so why not shallow fry the thigh steaks?

Personally I'd prefer to saute the victim and serve him with a side of heartbeet salad but unless you're entertaining that's a fair bit of trouble to go to for dinner, not to mention the mess you'd make  Wink

mate ... I will eat anything and everything that ain't nailed down .. seriously , it would be pretty unpleasant but if it is going to keep me alive then of course I would , hell , if it came to that I would probably even eat the airline meals - but only after I had finished off all the corpses  Wink ( just hope that I don't develop a taste for human flesh )

No, never. And before the "never say never" crowd jumps in, I said NEVER. I have read many survival manuals and there is always something to eat. If the situation is as you quoted for the movie "Alive", decend to a lower altitude and there are tons of things available (berries grow very well at sub-alpine levels in almost all areas of the world).

The normal human body can be sustained for about 2 weeks without any food at all. Even the intake of tiny amounts of food can lengthen that to a month or more. A normal person can walk many hundreds of miles in one month, finding varied things to eat along the way and stocking up when one finds a source to do so. It all comes down to how determined you are. Eric Rudolph (serial bomber) sustained himself for 5 years on "acorns and salamanders". He ate crushed turkey bones for calcium.

Humans were on this planet long before McDonald's appeared and always have found something to eat, you just have to be smart about doing it.

There are a lot of other species that could be potential food sources on this planet more plentiful and nutritious that a human body. It would be past a last resort for me.

I know you will probably not believe me, but I met once one of the survivors of the "alive" tragedy. My parents had a house for vacation in Uruguay, and we went to a Fishermen's village called Punta del Diablo. There was this young man, who was portrayed in the film (he was the one who lost his mother and sister). He was telling the story, and mentioned that he would have done it all over again if need be. I never forgot it, even though I was rather young at the time

My opinion?

I would never kill a human being to eat.

If it is already dead, in an emergency situation it becomes only a bunch of protein, fat and carbohydrates = a source of energy. I would eat the flesh without any problems.

Cheers

Personally, I would repulsed but as a matter of instinctual survival I probably would eat another human.

Is there a body part which you would call "off limits" no matter what happens? I would avoid any part of the head and it's contents and likely the genital area.

Wow, I can picture that being an interesting conversation.

Actually there is considerable evidence that as food ran short in New Guinea during WWII Japanese troops where practicing canabalism on captured troops, and even their own dead.

Then there was Ichi Jima (I hope I got that island right) where the commander of the base had the flight crews he captured executed and then consumed their livers thinking it added to his 'warrier sprit'. He got executed after the war for that stunt. The book about what happened on that island "Flyboys" is an interesting read.

BTW the famous shooting down of George Bush and his Avenger took place over that island. That is the the time he was picked up by sub.

Truth be told they just aquired a taste for it after we brought it over during the war, but it makes a good story.

Obviously, you don't understand the topography of the area, of Mendoza Province and far western Chile.

In order to 'descend' to lower altitudes, you had to climb mountains taller than the tallest mountain in the US Rocky mountains, perhaps as many as three times. And temperatures of -40 below at night with the windchill, whiteout conditions every third day.

Very VERY few valleys with green in the central andes, specially in the Mendoza area where the highest mountain on Earth save the Himalayas is located. The Andes unlike the Rockies are far higher and vertical. Much harder to build roads across and the like. Far harder to cross.

The 19th century army crossing from Argentina to liberate Chile, is thus considered by all military strategists one of the greatest feats in warfare history.

2 Cannibals stumble accross a dead guy in the jungle.
They argue for a while about how to divide up the body.
One of them says, "you start at the head and I'll start at the feet and we will meet half way" and they agree and tuck in.

After a short time, one of them says "This is great. I'm having a ball"
The other says "Slow down - you're eating too fast !!!"

No, the Donner Party were emigrants to California who practiced cannibalism after being caught in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in a once-a-century snowstorm.

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/donner/

Ishi is the subject of a classic non-fiction work written by the wife of a University of California anthropologist. He was the "last wild Indian" known in North America.

http://www.library.ucsf.edu/collres/archives/hist/ishi/

The history of the Donner Party, Ishi, the Missions, and the Gold Rush are taught to California 4th graders (hence the remark between Halls and me about the sugar cube Mission replicas we built back then).
