As nice as it is to see the US take a beating, Iw ould have rather not played the Russians in the quarters.

US Hockey has really gone downhill since they started letting NHL players in. One practice before competing isn't enough guys.

No offense to anyone but...Thank God! I find it so pathetic that the US won one game against Russia, and yet they already made a full-scale movie on it. A documentary- sure; but a movie- lol. It's just sad...

Whatever. When a bunch of college kids beat the most dominant hockey team in the world in 1980-and had lost to them 10-3 14 days before, it's a big deal. It's still probably the greatest upset in sports' history.

Maybe where you come from, it's sad, but here, it's still very inspirational.

Well it would be even worse if NHLers weren't allowed. Depth outside the NHL is greater in Canada and Europe than the US.

I wonder if they will make a women's hockey movie "disappointment on ice" after their loss to the Swedes? I'll tell you what though the US Women's Team had more hotties on their roster than any other women's team, not that that's saying too too much.

Let's see, Team Russia has the cream of the up and coming and future NHL superstars (Kovalchuk, Datsyuk, Malkin, Ovechkin), the US, well no...... This year isn't our year in the Olympics. 2010 is when USA Hockey will be back among the elite then if the NHL players do play in Vancouver. We'll have players like Jim Slater, Phil Kessel, Ryan Suter, Zach Parise, Jack Johnson, Dustin Brown, Patrick O'Sullivan, and Bobby Ryan just to name a few high quality USA players who will be hitting their prime around 2010. The same goes for Team Canada as well. In 2010, they'll definitely have a murderer's row of a line up.

Yeah to call it anything close to miracle 2 is a stretch. If you wanted miracle two, check out the swedes beating the US women the other night, that was a fairly major upset.
US hockey is in a transition olympics. There are quite a few young guys (gomez, gionta, cole, dipietro, etc) who will be around for the future and hopefully we can build a strong program around them.

There were actually two movies. And it wasn't about one game, my friend. It was how Herb Brooks, RIP, took a team of college kid, most of whom had never played to gether, and most of whom never got near the NHL, and made them into a Gold Medal team.

The first movie, back in the 80's, was called "Miracle On Ice", starring Karl Malden as Herbie; in "Miracle", it's Kurt Russell who plays the late Herb Brooks.

Actually twice, Feb 27, 1960 USA 3 USSR 2 in the semi-finals; US gets the gold and USSR the bronze. Herb Brooks the 1980 coach was one of the last guys if not the last to be cut from the 1960 squad.

I'll proabably get a few days for this one..

but, maybe if Bryant Gumbel had his way, and the USA had more black hockey players, they'd win the Gold.  biggrin

Seriously people, the USA is NOT a hockey player producing country. Just because the NHL is here, doesn't mean the USA will have the best players.

Aeroflot, it's kind of funny that you're shocked that a movie was made out of that 1980 game... do you have any idea how many movies have been made about high school football teams trying for a state championship, for instance? If it's a good story, it'll be turned into a movie by hollywood, regardless if it's "pathetic" that it was just one game that it focuses on

This is new: it seems Olympic curling is a hotter topic than ice hockey in Finland at the moment. Curling has been a tiny sport here, but now it could bring an Olympic medal.
But if the Finnish hockey team still goes strong in Turin, it sure gets back the attention, after all it is the most popular sport in Finland.

Yes the subject is misleading indeed.

When I say miracle, I mean the recent movie (I guess Kurt Russel had a leading role). It was about a game between USA and USSR in the 80s, where USA has won and that was kind of a symbolic victory. I mean Cold War!

So when I say Miracle 2, I mean this time it kinda worked out the other way.

Falcon84,
If my memory serves me, 13 players from the 80 squad went
on to play in the NHL. Here's the one's I remember:
Bill Baker
Neal Broten
Dave Christian
Steve Christoff
Jim Craig
Steve Janaszak
Mark Johnson
Rob McClanahan
Ken Morrow
Jack O'Callahan
Mark Pavelich
Mike Ramsey
Dave Silk
Herb Brooks went on to coach the Rangers and other teams.
The GM of the Team was Craig Patrick who held the
same job with both the Rangers and Pens, where he
won 2 Stanley Cups. Ken Morrow was also part of the
great Islanders dynasty back in the early 80's.

No offense taken but I see that your 16-20 in your profile. Back then the U.S. was sort of down, I.E. the Hostages in Iran, economy in the dumps, crappy cars coming from detroit(I was a 15 year old kid that year) and more. the cold war was really hot. The military was in a poor state. The win I think gave the US a big boost. A no-name team beat the best in the world. thats why it is remembered so fondly here. Plus Al Michels(sp?) call at the end was pure emotion. gotta love it

Jesus, Mother Mary and Joseph, can't you people read or are you in denial of what we're all trying to tell you? That victory meant more to the U.S. than simply winning a single game.

No one said that was the greatest sports movie ever, I agree with you, it's a Disney movie, so the credibility is somewhat shot right there. I didn't think that movie was that great either, but when a bunch of rag-tag college kids thrown together in a year or so beats a team of professionals who had been essentially the same team for as long as that, it's a big effing deal, I don't care where you're from. It's like if Saudi Arabia made it to the World Cup finals and beat Brazil.

Perhaps it's because the Soviets lost, so they think it's stupid, if it was the other way around: a bunch of no-name Russians beating a group of NHLers in that day, I'll bet not only the USSR had won, but I'm sure Communism would have scored a symbolic victory as well.

Most of the members of the 1980 Team did not have stellar careers afterwards. Some never even made it to the NHL, and most of those who did played less than 300 games in the NHL. And a few of the players were pros, as they had played in the minor leagues (IHL, AHL, CHL, SHL) or in the WHA prior to 1980.

Very few are at that caliber, but to write him off completely because you think he's overhyped is irrational. Some players need to spend a couple of years in college or Juniors to hone their game, that doesn't mean they suck.

To Srbmod,
I agree that most of the 80 Olympic team members were
at best mediocre NHL players. I was just making a list of
the guys who went on to play in the NHL. A few of them
actually did well. Ken Morrow won both the gold medal
and Stanley Cup the same year. He was a key defenseman
with the Isles for quite a few years. Dave Christian lasted
a few years with Winnipeg etc. and Ramsay played quite
a few years in Buffalo.

Jim Craig was quite a disappointment in the NHL. If I remember
correctly, the Atlanta Flames were having financial probs at
the time and they rushed him into a game immediately after
the Olympics. I used to have Rangers tickets for years and
years, Basically that's how I remember seeing most of them
play pro. Since this is an aviation site, If my old brain serves me,
after hockey Steve Christoff became a pilot.

The guy I'm sorry who never played for that team was Joe Mullen.
He was playing for Boston College at the time and I think he
dropped out of school and signed with the Blues. Joey went on to
have a Hall of Fame career. He along with his brother Brian and
older brothers Tom and Kenny are class people.

I'm guessing Aeroflot777 is a happy camper tonight.

No kidding. Just like with the Summit Series in 72 or whatever when Canada faced the Soviet Union. Canada won in 7 GAMES for jesus sake and they made the biggest deal about it, on a shitty game winning goal no less.

Oh well, Russia won today and they will take the Gold, they have skill, speed and determination(something past Russian teams did not have).
