Official Olimpic Hockey Thread

Wed Feb 22, 2006 10:35 am

Hi guys,
for every ice hockey fan like me, this thread is perfect.
Tomorrow, we will see the Quaterfinals. They are as follows:

1). Sweden - Switzerland
2). USA - Finland
3). Canada - Russia
4). Czech Rep - Slovakia

The best match (not because I am biases) will be CZE - SVK, since its full of political influence. Czechoslovakia separated in 1992 and now we stand against each other in the 2006 Olympics. I hope CZE wins !!!  Silly

As for Sweden - Switzerland, I think Sweden is the favorite, but SUI has suprised both Canada and Czech by beating the. They definitely like being the underdog of the match. Sweden will have a difficult match, but I belive they will win.

USA - Finland, FIN has been extremely strong this tournament, while the USA has been weaker. I think FIN will be in the Semifinals.

And last, Canada - Russia. CAN had a bad tournament until now, while RUS played well. This will be definitely the most tied match and I am not able to predict a winner.

As for the whole tournament, I believe that the winner will be a EUROPEAN team this year.
So post, analyze, criticize and all other things.

I would guess CZE, FIN, SWE and RUS go the semifinals.
I won't be able to see any icehockey on Thu but I am sure LOT of Finns will be watching that game.
Funny thing is that against all odds Olympic CURLING has got more attention In Finland lately than ice hockey, Finnish men's curling team has suddenly became a medal favourite, out of the blue...

Checo77, do you know why ice hockey has become so big in Czech Rep and Slovakia, compairing to other Central European countries?

Czech Rep v. Slovakia in hockey sounds like Finland v. Sweden, the closest and dearest enemies  fight

Quoting Checo77 (Thread starter):
1). Sweden - Switzerland
2). USA - Finland
3). Canada - Russia
4). Czech Rep - Slovakia

I think that the semi-finals will include - Finland, Canada, Czech and Sweden.

I'm hoping Canada can put it together, they really got it together during the first period of the Czech game today, although Vokun let in 2 really soft goals. Canada will have a good game, they need to learn to play as a team though, and hope that Brodeur has a another great game.

Finland has had an unbelievable tournament and is probably the most deserving team. I don't think that the USA has a chance unfortunatly, although I would love to see another Canada/USA final, although that's probably not good for the game in the long run to have 2 dominant teams.

Sweden with Sundin and Alfredson should be able to make short work of Switzerland, although the Canadian defector Di Pietro has had a great tournament.

Czech should walk away with that game... No contest.

Hmmm Checo , i agree with all but one of your predictions , obviously the Canada one Lolz , but I also think it will be a close game , but I know our boys are gonna pull through , we will just have to wait and see wont we?

I predict Canada wins gold  Smile

And a Big ConGrats to our women for bringing us yet another Gold medal , as if there was any doubt , although the U.S side was a fairly strong competitor

But now you're inappropriately using spaces and commas.  duck

I think Russia and Sweden will duke it out for gold, with Russia taking the gold. The bronze medal game will be Slovakia and Finland, with Slovakia taking the bronze. Just a hunch with no scientific merit. I would give my first-born to watch Russia - Canada.

1). Switzerland - SwedenSweden shouldnt have too much touble with the swiss.
2). USA - FinlandFins goaltending will still be unbeatable and if the Finnish Flash Selanne keeps playing the way he has been he'll lead the Finns to victory.
3). Canada - Russia
Canada showed a glimpes in todays game of what they are capble of and of they play like they did in the first period in the czech game they should take the ruskies, although Russia is loaded with a load of Fire power in Kovvy, Ovechkin, Malkin, Datsyk. CAN in a shoot out victory.
4). Czech Rep - Slovakia Slovakia in this one, they have been unstopable thus far and wont be letting up anytime soon.

And like GulfstreamGirl said, congrats to the Womens team, although was it much of a shock to anyone?  Yeah sure

That is easy. As Czechoslovakia, we had a very strong tradition of hockey. We started playing it as Canada and USA did. I cant really 100% tell you why Hungary, Austria or Poland dont have a strong tradition in hockey. I guess they concentrated their powers in other sports. But never mind, as soon as we split, CZE started playing hockey with the Elites, while SVK fell all the way down to the bottom. But they started to build up a solid team, and from 2000 on, they are considered the hockey Elite (along with CZE, USA, CAN, FIN, SWE and RUS).

CAN won thanks to the first period. We played an excelent game at the end, but we were out of forces at the end. Never mind, congrats to CAN for winning. Hope to see in the finals again  Smile

I dont want to insult Slovakians but they have always been scared of us, because have a "name" not only in the hockey world. And since we have been a same country for 70 years, they still have respect for us. We were the "big country" and the "rich country" when we were Czechoslovakia. I think that they are pretty nervous playing against us and that their unstopable race though the tournament will have no relevancy here.

Of course, congrats to the Canadian gils, excelent tournament they played. I just wonder why CZE does not have a solid women team when we have one of the best male teams?

Imtimidation can play a key role in a game buuuut if Hasek doesnt start, Elias isnt healthy and they continue to sit in the box that "name" could go out the window, but i do agree what you said earlier this game will be the most heated and entertaining out of all the 1/4 finals.

Obviously Finland is the hot team in this tournament. Team USA has struggled with offense, but their goal-tending and defense have been pretty good. Bad goal-tending and crappy team defense are very hard, bordering on impossible, to overcome in hockey, but scoring is different.

Anybody who watches the NHL very much has seen good teams struggle on offense from time to time, and then inexplicably turn it on again. I agree with you that the smart money is on Finland here, but if Team USA can get some production out of their forwards, it could be competitive.

1). Sweden - Switzerland
2). USA - Finland
3). Canada - Russia
4). Czech Rep - Slovakia

Well, the first match is probably going to fall into the Swedish hands, though I would absolutely laugh my rear end off if Switzerland won, especially since Sweden lost their game against Slovakia on purpose to ensure they would meet the Swiss team.
The second match is a bit more tricky - Danish TV haven't been that focused on the Finnish games, so I really can't say how strong they are. The US team seems to be getting their acts together as the tournament has progressed, and I predict a tough fight.
The third game is going to be close - however, Canada haven't impressed at all, and they were lucky not to lose out against the Czechs yesterday. Meanwhile, Russia (whom I'm rooting for at these games), despite their initial loss to Slovakia, has shown some serious strength - especially when it comes to the tougher opponents.
The last game is going to be a grade A+ killer, and while the Czech team is most likely the favourites, it's worth noting that Slovakia had a breeze against Sweden yesterday, while the Czech team were bombarding Canada without getting the victory.

Having said all that, I'm predicting Sweden, Finland, Russia & the Czech Republic for the semi-finals.

Without a doubt. We got really lucky, we outplayed the Czech's by a mile in the first period, and then got taken to task in the second and the third period. If we break that game down, there is no doubt that the Czech's deserved to win. Two of Canada's goals were unbelievably weak! If it weren't for Brodeur then this game would have been a lock for the Czech's.

Well well what can I say? On paper Sweden is by far the better team than Switzerland and are today the big favourite to win the match, but don't underestimate Switzerland. We beat Canada and the Czech Republic to finish in second place in the Group Stages. I don't see why we should not be able to pull off a third big win? We've done it twice, why not do it a third time? One saving point for the Swiss team is that our goaltending has been excellent thanks to Martin Gerber and David Aebischer. In the end I think Sweden will win, but it won't be a walk in the park for them, since the Swiss team has already made it to where they wanted to (Quarterfinals) and has nothing to lose or fear.

Canada will lose today. They have shown very little, starting from the goalkeeper to the front line.

I'm very disappointed by their play to date.

I hope they can turn it around, but Russia will be a tough match.

I just don't see it. (victory)

GO CANADA...i hope that helps a bit.....they are gonna need it.

I would agree that we have shown very little, but as far as the goaltending goes, I'm not sure what games you've been watching, but the only reason we won Yesterday was goaltending, and the only reason the Finland game wasn't 5-0 was because of goaltending...

Just my take on it though.

right, but we need/needed more than 2 periods of solid goaltending.

All of them. My statement was a general overview  Smile. Some guys have shown some greatness, but we need a more concentrated team effort showing the full potential of these guys. We know they have "it" but i think AC lost it when they transfered their luggage in FRA.  Wink

The Europeans are dictating their game style. Canada needs to reverse that type of play.

Two quaterfinals are over.
1). Sweden wins easily 6:2 against Switzerland.
2). USA goes home after loosing 3:4 against Finland

So until now, not much surprises. Lets all go to the TV now to watch Canada-Russia and Czech Rep-Slovakia

What do you think about the results?

I only caught the 3rd period of the USA game, we really poured it on at the end but the Finn goalie was playing well and it just doesn't seem like we take very accurate shots, more of just throwing everything at the goalie and hoping one slips in. I saw the highlights, the first US goalie let in some shots he should have stopped (off the rebound ect.) and if not for that, we may well have won. Anyway, as I type, Slovakia just scored in the early minutes of the 3rd period and we have a game now at 2-1... can't wait to watch the conclusion!

GREAT!!! We are in the semifinals.
Anyway, lets analyze the quaterfinals and lets make predictions for the semifinals:

1). CZE - SWE: Sweden has a great team, as well as Czech Rep. It will be a tough match, but I hope (and believe) we will win.

2). RUS - FIN: My prediction goes to Finland. They are by far the best team so far in the Olympics. Russia is very good as well this year, but I think FIN is a more solid team.

Well, post, analyze, predict.

Sweden - Czech: I'll go with the Czech on this one. If its true that Ohlund is out thats a HUGE hole on the defense for them, the Czech or just that much better than the swedes.

Russia - Finland: I'll go with Russia on this one. I dont want to because I've always liked Finland but man Ovechkin is on fire and if he rolls in to the game the way he finished todays game he is definitely the game breaker.

Sometimes all you can do is look them in the eye and ask " how much did your mom drink when she was pregnant with you?"

When? Not since the pros were playing, certainly.

YooYoo is onto something. Kelly Hrudey (sp?) was saying the same thing - Canada has never performed all that well on the big ice. Although the juniors sometimes have, I guess.

I guess we won back in '48, for example. (Thanks to that incessant Royal Bank commercial for reminding me of that). But that was before pros, and I do'nt know what the ice surface was like back then. We certainly didn't win in 94, 92, 88, etc.

Sweden won tonight 7-3, I thought the first Czech goalie s.u.c.k.e.d, second one was much better, good news for Sweden. Swedes that impressed me as always, Holmström, Lidström, Alfredsson and Forsberg, Sedin twins put in a
good preformance for a change.
From New Yorqatar to Califarbia...

Ya, i thought of that before. I'm not sure of the rink dimesions back them, but i was thinking of modern hockey  Wink

Sweden won!!!...part one of my prediction has come true!!

Now Russia off to beat the Finns. The Finns are good but the team chemistry Russia showed against Canada was impressive. The Finns have a great D. Should be a good game. I think it's on now ?...eeekkkk
