An extract from a blog I wrote the day Team Canada was named. Guess I was right.
McCabe: he might be having a career year but apparently there are some things this guys just can’t seem to do. Surely you’ve heard this sentence before “McCabe at the line and oh he can’t keep it in.”
Bertuzzi: “Lacks discipline and takes a lot of bad penalties in the offensive zone. Can get lazy at times.” That is a direct quote from his TSN.ca profile. I’m not a big fan on Bob “bobblehead” McKenzie but I agree with him on that quote 100%. I assume Gretzky and Co. thought that because he’s 1/37th Italian and the games were in Italy this year he might lift his game. Call me unromantic but I think selection should be based on a little more than having a vowel at the end of one’s surname.
Doan: It’s no secret that Doan is Gretzky’s cockboy. There can be no doubt about this, how the fuck else did he get on this team? There is the outside possibility that Wayne has been taking selection advice as well as betting advice from that lovely wife of his (cheap shot I know).
Iginla: There is no doubt that he is useful hockey player, but he’s not exactly having a career year now is he. I hate to say it but this is a “we’re so multicultural, look at us” selection at best. Canada would have done well to have selected Jonathan Cheechoo over Iginla.
Draper: This whole notion that Canada needs some gritty players is ridiculous. IIHF hockey is not NHL hockey - there is no need for Draper. I realize he has been a servant to the game, so send him thank you card. Canada have not scored in over 120 minutes of play and yet Draper and his 16 points in 56 games will likely dress for all the remaining games - leaving Staal and his 75 points milling around the Olympic village.
Now that we're out, I'm done watching the games.
