Eerie Experience

Sat Feb 25, 2006 6:36 am

This past week I was doing touch and goes Scottsdale Airport when a mayday call went out by another aircraft. The only thing I heard was "mayday! mayday!" and then silence for a few seconds. ATC came on and asked whether the mayday caller was still on frequency, but there was no response. I shrugged it off as some kid or something screwing with the radio or something.

When I got home, I checked out the news as usual, and this copter crash was right on the front page. That's when it hit me, the mayday call was in fact legit, and the people in the chopper are no longer alive.

Talk about an eerie feeling.  ill

I had a similar situation, except I was there when the crash occured...

I was supervising a construction crew working on a taxiway at TEB when an aircraft radioed in with engine problems and that he was unsure he would make the field. Moments later he was off the runway engulfed in flames. It's even more of a sobering experience being a pilot yourself and watching your friends and coworkers pull a man from a burning aircraft... Two things I'll never forget: The urgency in his voice, and the pilot on final behind him pleading for the crash trucks as he had seen the entire thing...
