What's Happened To Pop Culture?

Wed Mar 01, 2006 12:47 pm

I just realized something. I saw this thread:

http://www.airliners.net/discussions/non_aviation/read.main/1051389

And I saw that many of you named the song "My Humps" by the Black Eyed Peas. I and some friends were talking about a similar topic and my friend Cameron made a great comment:

"I never thought I could ever hear something that would make breasts unattractive until I heard that song."

I couldn't agree more...

You're probably asking:What's the point of this thread? I guess its- why are songs like that popular, especially among teen girls my age? It has to be one of the stupidest songs in the world... What happened to pop music that was actually good, like the classic rock bands of the '50s, '60s, and '70s?

Thanks for listening,

PS. It would be nice if I didn't get flamed for this... I'm one of the less confrontational members of this website (thats probably why I'm one of the lesser known members of this site)...

Pop culture evolves with the times. This type of infatuation with current music is no different than with past generations.

For the most part, young people like popular music because its popular to like. Once this connection is made, it eases its way into mainstream culture.

I agree with that... I guess I'm just wondering why everything has become oversexualized... Keep in mind that I'm hardly conservative, I have no problem with sex or nudity, and I strongly oppose censorship; but when I hear a song like that, I'm thinking, "Why don't pop songs have substance anymore? Why would anyone write a song like that? What's the point?" You know what I mean?

When did pop songs ever have substance?

Its the same with movies, I think writers of film and song have just plain run out of ideas. Just now one of our late teen delivery drivers pulled in with radio blaring hip-hop. I tried to explain that a turn table is not a musical instrument, got a blank stare .......

'I Think I love You' - Partridge Family. The epitome of a power ballad with emotion and substance.

Ditto....

Tune in the oldies station, and really listen to those lyrics. They were just as bubblegum and pointless back then (though there are some notable exceptions). Don't listen to the classic rock station, as a lot of that stuff wasn't truely pop music but aimed at more specific audiences and only later gained more universal appeal.

Pop culture, fads if you will, vary widely. And sometimes you'll like it, sometimes you won't. And eventually you will be just too damn old to get it.
