Airport Scene In The Movie Goldfinger?

Sun Mar 05, 2006 6:22 am

On a website that gave an historical overview of MIA during the 60's and 70's stated that MIA was in the James Bond movie Goldfinger. I've seen this great Bond flick several times and the only scene I think could be MIA is when ODDJOB is driving the ill fated gangster to the airport. It is supposed to be in Kentucky. But, I could tell, the approach with the highway sign saying International Airport is one that takes you onto that distinctive onramp to MIA. And, after ODDJOB snuffs the thug and drives the Lincoln to the auto wrecking junk yard, the scenery looks like the areas that used to border Corrosian Corner! Scrub pines and flat. Doesn't look like Kentucky to me!

I'm a big James Bond fan, and in the hundreds of times I've seen Goldfinger, I don't remember MIA. There's a fly over of Miami Beach near the beginning - it's the only overview shot I can remember.

Maybe, near the end, when Bond boards a private jet on his way to meet the President, was shot at MIA (although it takes place near SDF or Fort Knox).

BTW, in Ian Fleming's novel, there was a part where Bond is hanging out at MIA, waiting to meet a contact...

Homer, next time you watch Goldfinger, pay special attention to the scene where OD-JOB drives that thug with the New York accent to the airport with his share of gold. Of course ODD-JOB gives the Brooklyn gangster a shit eating grin and snuffs him, then drives the shiny new 1965 Lincoln Continental to the compacting wrecking yard. Look at that sign that says International Airport. You may also notice an advertisement for Delta or Eastern. Then, there is the scene where Felix Lighter and another swinging 60s American agent are stopping for Colonel Saunders KFC and using a 1960s directional tracker. I'm sure, this is one of the roads near MIA in one of Miami's seamier sections.

There are a ton of flubs in Goldfinger, so I wouldn't doubt what you're saying, especially since palm trees aren't known to naturally inhabit Kentucky.  Wink

A bit of trivia on this. It's actually a '64 Continental that suddenly becomes an engineless '63 when it's in the crusher. Also, the car weighed a bloody couple of tons, but it and all the gold were lifted into the back of a Ranchero that could barely haul a half ton.

Sean Connery actually never set foot in the U.S. while filming Goldfinger. (I read that somewhere a while back, and keep looking for clues when I watch it, and there are several.)

Look at the TV set in Bond's hotel room. It is a European mode;. Note the funny looking "Outey" picture tube!

Filming began on January 20, 1964 at Miami's Fountainbleau Hotel, but Sean Connery, who was filming Marnie at the time didn't join the film until a few weeks later. His Fountainbleau scenes were shot at Pinewood studios in London then combined with the location footage through rear projection techniques and clever editing.

And do you know what type of aircraft this is?

You would think that when a website would boast MIA as being featured in Goldfinger, that it would be more than just signage to the onramp. Like a terminal and/or tarmac scene...
