This Guy Has A Woman's Name! Any Other?

Mon Mar 06, 2006 3:47 am

Yes its pretty ridiculous.... I've always known Evelyn to be a woman's name but I came across an English author called Evelyn Waugh !
Didn't know it was also a man's name!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evelyn_Waugh

Could you think of any other guy who has a woman's name or vice versa ?

Thanks

My first name is Shan (like Shannon but without the -non on the end) and I get mail all the time for Ms. Shan Nichols. When I was going off to college years ago I got a letter from the Panhellenic Council. I got right on the phone and made sure UF knew I was a guy and not a girl. Maybe I should have kept my mouth shut and been assigned to the girls dorm my freshman year.

I've known some guys named Lynn and Meredith in my lifetime.

Englishspeaking people often also think that my name "Jan" is female (a version of Jane). In fact it is the Northern and Eastern European version of John (used from Belgium through the Netherlands, Northern Germany, Scandinavia to Poland and the Czech Republic).

Jan

BTW, in Roman Catholic areas of Germany many men have "Maria" as a middle name, e.g. the writer Erich Maria Remarque

Same happens in Latin America. I have a friend who is called Juan Maria and a cousin called Jose Maria. It's pretty normal here.

A friend of mine's boyfriend is called Michael Lucia. At least here, Lucia is a woman's name.

It comes from the teaching hospital at the University of Florida...Shands. It is named after an old state senator who got the money for the hospital and medical school. You can see my ties to UF go back quite a way. It also turns out to be Chinese in nature and translates loosely to "big mountain" which if you've seen me you know is pretty dead on accurate.

Shannon is a good Southern name IMHO although I do get grumbly when people just assume it is my full name when in fact it isn't.

My name is also topic of discussion. I get hundreds of messages and mails a year, about people thinkin I'm a girl. And I don't even know anybody named like me. Although, just a week ago, somebody mistaked me for his cousing, and thought I was her. Turns out she's'named just like me, but she's Colombian, and I'm Dominican. Which is the name, go figure.. "Daurys".

Do you know anybody named Daurys?

P.S. I have a family friend who named their daughter after my name, Kyleen.

My name, Francis, is a big source of confusion for people who do not know me.

All my life, I have received mail or had my name entered by people as "Frances"--on airline tickets, doctors' records, etc. To this day I still get mail addressed to "Ms" or "Mrs" Francis (or Frances) Smith.

Just so you know, I am male and very sure of it.

When I was little, teachers, YMCA staff, and other children's workers thought I was a girl--because of my abnormally high pitched voice (due to cleft palate and other problems) and my headband-mounted bone-conduction hearing aids, and mispronounced my name as Francine or some other form thereof. I wonder now if I should have simply dropped my drawers to correct their error once and for all!

To this day, the error still persists. Even some of my doctors can't figure out my gender--they often give the wrong form of my name (Frances) instead of my true form (Francis)! The error persists in various forms--on plane tickets, class lists, rosters, etc. I continually have to correct people on this.

Some Italians still have trouble understanding that in English and in German "Andrea" is a woman's name - to us, it is a male name only (the equivalent of Andrew and Andreas respectively).
However, I have to say that I've recently met a few Italian girls called "Andrea", so perhaps this new variant is catching on.

Quoting Capital146 (Reply 15):

In Italy "Nicola" is a male name (the equivalent of your "Nicholas"), but it is pronounced differently (the stress is on the second syllable rather than on the first - i.e. "Nicola" rather than "Nicola").

Same here: names such as Gian Maria or Giovanni Maria are quite common.

On another note, I myself have never had my name confused for a girl's name (it is quite obvious), but when I'm abroad, my name always becomes "Frederico"  hissyfit

My daddy left home when I was three
And he didn't leave much to ma and me
Just this old guitar and an empty bottle of booze.
Now, I don't blame him cause he run and hid
But the meanest thing that he ever did
Was before he left, he went and named me "Sue."

Well, he must o' thought that is quite a joke
And it got a lot of laughs from a' lots of folk,
It seems I had to fight my whole life through.
Some gal would giggle and I'd get red
And some guy'd laugh and I'd bust his head,
I tell ya, life ain't easy for a boy named "Sue."

My uncle's name is Abbie. When he went to college they actually assigned him to a female dorm!

It's actually worse than just Abbie, his middle name is Boring. Don't you just love family names?

There's plenty of short versions of names that overlap like Pat, Jerry, etc.

If it's a continuous problem SmithAir, why don't you simply call yourself Frank? Most people use a diminutive form of their name anyway.

Another name that springs to mind, and one which changes gender depending on which side of the Atlantic you're on, rather than spelling, is Robin.

I know a guy whose name is Allison. I'm pretty sure that his parents didn't have the idea that this name is feminine, at least in the USA AFAIK.

And once in Busch Gardens (Tampa, FL) there was a big, strong guy as cashier in a restaurant and in his name tag was written Amanda - I wasn't able to hold my laughter. It was an awful situation... Big grin
