AT&T To Buy BellSouth...what Do You Think?

Mon Mar 06, 2006 5:33 am

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,186853,00.html

Interesting to see the consolidation of the industry. As an AT&T employee who lives in BellSouth territory I welcome it (even though I just switched to Vonage.) Now we can actually get discounts previously unavailable to those of us out-of-region. i suppose it is still up to the regulators since Ma Bell seems to be making a comeback after the 1984 breakup. The guantlet has been thrown down for Verizon to respond. Your thoughts?

SBC + ATT = ATT... ATT/SBC + Bellsouth = ATT. Why does it seem to me that AT&T is trying to become a conglomerate... They will now own ALL of Cingular Wireless, they control part of Yahoo. So now you can have Cingular, AT&T internet services, and AT&T Phone services...

Well, as powerful as they may become, it WILL give the customers a bit of ease, as now they can recieve only 1 bill in the mail detailing everything instead of 3 bills. They may even get small discounts for having All of the services, saving them money... I say go for it.

I agree with you here. From someone in the consulting arm of the company it will be nice for the client to be able to point a finger and say fix your problem instead of us pointing at the service provider who in turn points fingers at the local loop provider and so on.

I only worry from a monopoly viewpoint if indeed they start raising prices, etc. and eliminating competition. Given the amount of new LECs out there I don't believe it will happen but we just became an even bigger gorilla in the room so who knows.

Doesn't anyone find it slightly ironic that 25 years later, we're basically back where we started? Or am I just showing my age?

It almost makes me glad that Comcast is about to introduce phone service here. We ditched AT&T as our long distance provider as we found a provider who is way cheaper. Never been much of a fan of BellSouth; we did away with our call waiting and a few other options a few years ago and our bill actually went up.

Its all about offering triple or quadruple play in the future. Fixed line operators can lock their customers into internet/TV/wired/wireless service with them and offset the decline in "traditional" revenue sources.

Personally I think that the consolidation of communications companies is great. Although this particular merger does not affect me in any way whatsoever, I like the model that Bell Canada uses. Bell offers Internet, Cellular Communication, Satellite TV and Land Lines, and the more you purchase from Bell, the more of a discount you get, plus having everything on one bill is extremely nice, not a bill from the Cell, Satellite, Land Line and Internet companies respectively.

I've never understood the resentment of having more than one bill each month. Do people really expect to get a single bill with every single charge listed for them? If so, just put every monthly bill as a recurring debit to your credit/debit card and then look at your credit/debit statement. Seems easy enough to me, and you don't have to give up the benefits of competition to get it.

AT&T was actually larger than the old Ma Bell prior to being merged with SBC. Now it's slowly adding the old power back as well.

No, you're not showing your age...you're showing your good memory. And yes, I do find it ironic that the consolidation is happening and Ma Bell is coming back. I find it more ironic that I said I would never work for a Telco and although my consulting group operates very independently within the company we are still part of a Telco.

Yep! That's the plus side of it. Dial tone is a commodity now but the additional services is where the money is at these days.

But we are not quite where we were 25 years ago. There is cellular, Voice over IP(VOIP) and a host of other companies out there. ATT although trying to make a comeback is nowhere close to where it was 25 years ago.

Who would have thought that the buyout of Ameritech by Southwestern Bell was the beginning of all this?

I'm just thinking back what would have happened here, in Oklahoma City, if we were successful in the bid to land the Southwestern Bell/SBC headquarters that was up for grabs - but remained in San Antonio.

Only a couple more for the SBC group...well now AT&T even though the SBC people are running the joint...to go and buy out before the control all the old baby bells.  Smile

Cingular bought AT&T Wireless for $41 Billion without batting an eye. 60% of that money came out of the same pot that is financing this transaction.

At the time of the breakup of AT&T in the 1980's I vaguely remember a comedy skit with Lily Tomlin as Ernistine the satirical telephone operator calling on the Baby Bells to re-unite. One ringy-dingy...

Seems ma bell is resurgent...

With the buyout the Cingular name will be dropped and ATT Wirless will replace Cingular Wireless. That's going to piss a lot of people off.

Well, it seems the 'future' as predicted by AT&T back in 1989 when I took a ride on the big 'golf ball' at Disney World will turn out to be true after all...

I think that this is a big deal because it calls into question whether there should be anti-trust enforcement with respect to non-tangible products.

Remember, the argument was that AT&T had to be broken up in order to give consumers a choice. Now the internet gives consumers a choice that is far greater than the government could. Even AT&T employees are using VoIP for their long distance services.

I think that the EU should lay off Microsoft and instead focus on creating a business environment where upstart software companies can create the next great thing. 30 years ago Microsoft didn't exist. IBM was king and people discussed whether they should break it up a la AT&T. Now IBM is selling off its wares to Chinese companies and is an also ran in the software industry (who uses OS2?).

While we'll never know whether the internet would have developed the way it did had AT&T not been broken up, I think it's clear that the access to a global information highway has certainly changed the rules.

Blue state thinking. The role of a corporation is to keep inefficient employees around rather than to maximize shareholder value by promoting efficiency.

You should take a look at the WSJ article last week on GM and their work room - where thousands of GM employees sit around all day collecting a paycheck and NOT working.

I don't know, it seems to me that it's probably most popular in NY. By the way, whic party won NY in the last five presidential elections the GOP or the Democrats? Who are NY's Senators?

But in any case, the article simply reported some very interesting facts without making a comment on them. Are you so afraid of having the truth reported that you're not even willing to expose yourself to the source?

That's not very liberal of you now is it.

So let me get this straight...If I am one of the "redundant" employees at Bell South, good at my job, just on the losing end of the merger. I am now unemployed, and my cable, phone, and internet bills have gone up, but I should take solice in the fact that the dickhead driving the Benz, who cut me off on my way to the unemployment office, will be able to buy a beach house using his dividend.

You're right, how could I have been so blind to the upside!  sarcastic  I should write my congressman immediately and demand that they lower his taxes, he needs it more than I!

Whether you take solaice in the events or not is purely up to you. I'm just saying that I don't think that the top concern of management should be ensuring that redundant employees stay on the payroll. Instead, they (at least in theory) should be looking after my interest as a shareholder. Many times that means treating your employees very well; but if they're no longer needed, then why should they stay? Life time employment, no matter how hard the left desires, is not a Constitutional right.

Telecom is going to continue to consolidate as technology improves. That's an absolute certainty. If you're not going to be proactive about getting out before the ax falls, then that's your choice but now you're going to have to deal with the consequences. I can tell you that when we looked for a new CIO last summer easily 80% of the applicants came from the telecom industry.

As for the taxes dig - well it just illustrates that liberal don't understand economics. Me paying twice as much in taxes won't do anything to not make redundant.

Look, if you're about to lose your job, I really am sorry. I certainly don't wish you or any of your colleagues ill will, but it's not my job or the job of the people I trust with my money to keep you employed if efficency can be gained by cutting you. That's just the reality of the capitalist economic system.

On the flip side, my company has a subsidiary in the Netherlands that we'd like to expand but the burdensome labor regulations just make it impossible to take an risk and grow the business because if we're wrong the exit costs are just too high. We could probably hire three (good paying) people today if we could be assured that if the expansion didn't work out, we wouldn't be stuck paying them not to work for months on end. Therefore, instead of investing in the Netherlands, we'll probably open an office in one of the former Eastern European states.

Don't know how you get that from my post. As an employee whose company was bought by SBC and then renamed AT&T I know exactly where my paycheck is coming from. We took the AT&T name because it has better global recognition than SBC would right out of the blocks. While the Chairman and CEO is SBC I get tons of emails a day announcing that so and so from both sides of the merger are retiring and that people form both sides of the merger are filling those positions. What you say is true but at the same time we are becoming a new company which is better than when I was on the buying end of the Whittman-Hart & USWeb/CKS clusterf*** a few years ago. That was Enron on a smaller scale but luckily I escaped with minimal damage.

I think 10,000 people are going to lose their jobs so a bunch of wall street merger and acquisition specialists and investment bankers can make truckloads of cash.

Also, if I were a shareholder in AT&T I'd be concerned. SBC bought AT&T only 4 months ago. Now BellSouth is going to join the party. I'd be very concerned about integration issues with the companies.
