The Brothers Are Doin' It For Themselves?

Tue Mar 07, 2006 8:06 pm

There is a certain merit to celebrating diversity.

However, when so much of a certain culture embraces what is deemed the "seedy underside" of American life, what are the limits of this celebration?

Absolute equality demands that we celebrate the pimp along with the President.

But there are those who believe that Hollywood is reversing progress in the name of advancing it.

A key question here is exactly which is the "culture" doing the embracing...

Given the content of the Washington Post article, it appears that a significant number of African-Americans (rightfully) found the decision to award the Oscar to that song questionable.

Which brings back the question about the identity of the culture doing the "embracing." I suspect that about the only people celebrating this particular Oscar are weak-minded buffoons and impressionable kids who aspire to nothing more than becoming contemporary Stepin Fetchits.

Oh, and the marketing people at certain record labels are probably happy too...seeing their prefabricated "culture" being rewarded by the cubic zirconia that is the Academy.

Yes, and the superficiality that the Academy has shown has turned many people completely off.

I, for one, did not like Chris Rock as a presenter, but neither did I like the last one, Jon Stewart. Neither of them have any gravitas. There is a thin line between self-deprecation and facile silliness, and that line has been crossed.

When Hollywood fails to take itself very seriously anymore, why should anyone else?

You do not offer a suggestion as to who the presenter should be, why is this?

I think it should be someone with experience.

Don't laugh -- I think Bob Barker should be considered. He's been on forever, and he has a sense of humor.

No, he isn't "hip". But so?

If not Bob, then someone with more intellectual experience than Jon Stewart. Not a comic.

If a comic, someone comparable to Bob Hope.

If not a comic, and if not Bob Barker, then someone comparable to David Niven, who once actually did host the Oscars.

Jon Stewart is no David Niven.

Agreed. It seems that not only is Hollywood not representative of American mainstream culture, it proudly defies it.

Which is fine, in and of itself, but why should anyone be surprised if ratings for the Oscars therefore decline?

The Oscars are not simply not actually hip, and no amount of attempted hippification, through use of Rock or Stewart, will make it so. Rather, the more I see of the Oscars, the more I am reminded of the Rolling Stones -- aged and increasingly, in my view, neither effectively, nor comedically, but simply tragically, hip.
