LA Vs NYC.. Which Would You Rather Go To?

Thu Mar 09, 2006 12:11 pm

I'm starting to idealize some summer travel plans for this summer (June/July). I've always wanted to go to Los Angeles and New York, but it looks like I may only get a chance to go to one of those this year.

So.. which would you rather go to and why? LAX or JFK/LGA?

I'd like to go LA because theres so much stuff to do there; the beach, see celebrity houses, west coast choppers, spotting at LAX...... plus its warmer in California... sometimes.

New York any day. I love the fact I can take a cab from LGA to Manhatten, then get everywhere I need to go by taxi or subway. I love walking and the fact so much is within walking distance just makes it that much better. Throw in the buildings, the people, the culture, the food and it's a no brainer for me.

Well I would pick NYC if you never been to either. My self I would pick LA since I been to NYC plenty of times.
LA is nicer in the summer I would imagine. NYC is hot and smells bad durring the summer. Both are great places but I only been to NYC once in the summer and that was years ago. Its not fun walking around or taking the subway when it is 90F outside.

No kidding. I live across the Hudson, in NJ, and ugh - the summer is miserably hot and humid. You do not want to be spending your time walking around the city if you can avoid it.

I've never been to NYC, but I've been to LA a bunch of times and I must say its a great place to visit. But if faced with a decision like yours, I'd go wherever was cheaper. Wink

It really depends on what you're looking for. I live in LA and have family in Manhattan so I'm familiar with both cities. Vacation wise, I have to recommend LA. LA has the scenery, ocean, beachs, mountains, desert, Hollywood, the Reagan Library where you can see the actual Airforce 1 (I think it's a 707 but if I am wrong I am sure I'll be corrected) that Regan used, film studio tours and live tapings of numerous different shows. And, if you play your cards right, you might get to see a movie star comit a murder (for which he'll be aquitted) or get arrested for drug possession or DUI (or all of the above). Also, it's a pretty safe bet that the temps will be sunny and between 75-85. The bad part is, because our public transit is a joke, you'll have to rent a car to get around out here. That will be a little dicey given our traffic "issues" so, bring your patience with you. New York wrote the book on public transit and, as long as they're not on strike, you can get around the city without too much difficulty. If you like lots of tall buildings, a bazzillion horn blowing taxicabs, Broadway shows, night clubs, and excellent restaurants and museums, then New York is your kind of town.

Transit strikes are very rare in NYC - I can't remember one prior to the one in December, and I've lived in the city since 1994. The transit runs 24/7.

NYC is aweful in the Summer, go to Los Angeles. The beaches in Santa Monica and Venice Beach are really beautiful, Coney Island beaches are...

Not to mention Staten Island's Beaches!

Go to LA.

Much more variety aircraft wise, plus the scenery if you want to get away from aircraft for a few hours. Less hassle from the cops as well!

If I had to pick between the two I would go with NYC. LA requires too much travel to get from A to B and public transportation and taxis are few and far between. LA is a great town but NYC is just easier to get around on vacation.

I would go to Los Angeles over NYC in a heartbeat. LA has better weather, better scenery (beaches, mountains, deserts, ect) LA is bigger in land area, LA has Hollywood and all the movie star shit. I never really liked NYC, I always thought their skyline looked old. I also never liked how cramped it was.

For Airports..... probably LAX, allthough LGA&JFK are high on my 'to (re)visit' list as well. For the city (cannot really comment on LA) NYC, it has to be one of the best cities in the western world... and I'm not a city person!

I've been to Orlando in August and it was cooler there than back in NY, the humidity in the NYC/NJ area is awefull in the Summer.

I always tell folks who want to visit NY to come anytime but Summer and January/Feburary. The Autum is the best time of year, clean air great weather and no crowds.

To clear something up: I'm not talking about for spotting, here. If that were so I would've posted in this in av polls/prefs or something. By "which would you rather visit" I meant for actually doing things IN the town.  Smile

I'd rather take the dry heat over the humid summers of the northeast.

I'll try not to be biased (because I like NYC and LA) but it depends on what you like. If you are into the whole big city lifestyle, shopping, different nightlife, and looking at history, NYC is good for that.

What I like about LA (and all of SoCal) is that it's great for tourists because there really is a LOT to see here: beaches, mountains, hollywood, theme parks like Disneyland and Six Flags. There is also plenty of culture at the Getty Center and LACMA (part of the Miracle Mile of museums). West LA is awesome and so is 3rd Street, Santa Monica for a nice walkaround. By the age on your profile it seems like you're too young to go clubbing. But overall LA is a good place for tourists.

NYC. Unless your folks want to rent a car LA is tough to get around in. LGA to Times Sqaure, something like 8 bucks, JFK to Times Square even less since you can buy a one day pass at the subway station. LGA you have to take bus to the subway station and they don't sell the all day pass on the bus.

NYC has great museums, and you can't beat the deals in shopping. Hit Macy's and you can head back to school dressed in the latest fashions for maybe a 3rd the price. No deals like that in LA. There's just a lot more to do in NYC and its a lot more accessible than LA.

The Valley isn't close to all of L.A., let alone the where a tourist would want to go, but besides that, I would take 105 and dry in Calabasas over 90 and 90% in Manhattan

Not sure I agree. Couple weeks ago I had a friend visit from the east coast. We went skiing Wednesday night, hit the beach Thursday afternoon (she surfed, I watched), dined on The Queen Mary in Long Beach Thursday night, visited museum row in L.A. Friday, saw a live taping of a sitcom (2 1/2 Men) at Warner Brothers Studios Friday night, had lunch at Moonshadows in Malibu Saturday (Harrison Ford was sitting at the table next to ours), drove up to Hollywood and watched some early work being done at the Kodak Theatre in preparation for the Academy Awards, drove back down to Dockweiler Beach and saw an amazing sunset while planes from LAX were taking off right over our heads, and Sunday took an hour or so drive over to Palm Springs.
Now I'm not saying there aren't things to do in NYC but to say there's "a lot more to do" in NYC than LA isn't entirely accurate.

"LA" is more than just Beverly Hills and Hollywood. SoCal is HUGE and there is plenty to do here. And honestly for a kid his age, I would recommend SoCal because there are a lot of things here that kids enjoy too.

NY any day-- I live in LA and while it's great to live here cuz the weather is awesome, NY for a tourist is so much better since it's so easy to get around with cabs and subways. LA you have to rent a car which adds costs and you have to find your way around through nasty traffic.

Was in LA beginnning of Feburary and again Mid Feburary. Weather wise, it was about 15C degrees and foggy for the 2 days i was there first but then Feb. 15 when i was back it was about 24C and sunny, just that weather alone in Feburary i'd have to tip my cap to LA, theres a lot more to do but if i can go somewhere and be warm in the middle of winter where theres an ocean i'm sold.

I'de love to go back to LA . I was out there in November and loved it . I've been there 5 times and always have a great time . The traffic sucks, but the people drive better than they do here .
For me,there are tons of stuff to do and see . I saw Jay Leno again,a bunch of celebrity graves , LAX spotting and of course,In-N-Out Burger ! I wish they'de come to NY.

I grew up in New York. Never been to LA, never want to go.  yuck

Start spreading the news
I'm leaving today
I want to be a part of it, New York, New York
These vagabond shoes
Are longing to stray
And make a brand new start of it
New York, New York
I want to wake up in the city that never sleeps
To find I'm king of the hill, top of the heap
These little town blues
Are melting away
I'll make a brand new start of it
In old New York
If I can make it there
I'll make it anywhere
It's up to you, New York, New York.

I want to wake up in the city that never sleeps

Have to disagree. They Macys at 34th and 7th is a lot bigger than any other Macys I've ever been too and I've been to a lot of them. The carry a lot more stuff than the other stores. The racks of discounted clothing are larger and a lot more numerous and the other stores. Each designer has there own section of the floor. Not just a few racks or pods. We have a Macys here in Houston at the Galleria and it pales in comparison to the one in New York. The girls look forward to flying to LGA and traveling in to manhatten every year the week or so before school starts to shop for clothes. We've checked and we save a ton over what we would have spent buying it here in Houston.

LA is great, if you have a car. On my LA vacation last year did way to much, but I have GPS in the car.

NYC if you can afford it, cars are not required.

But for spotting, nothing beats the burgers at In'n'Out! And you can soak your feet in the cold pacific as the planes fly by. Already checked on my plans for what to do in LA this year.

If you want a good eating experience, go to the Encounters restaurant at the LAX theme building. Warning! Go see the bathroom BEFORE you need to go pee, cause the first time I saw it I could barely go! Its a little expensive, but the food is good.
