Oh goody - and Chertoff is taking the lead on it. We should be just fine. . .  sarcastic

Seriously, while we need to be aware of what's going on and vigilant for mutations of the strain, bird flu has become the media's latest paranoid health fantasy. As the article notes, 95 people have died since 2003 - that's a whoping 0.000000527777778% of the population per year. As long as they track it, I think we're fine for now.

Simply more scare tactics by this administration as far as im concerned. Why the hell is Chertoff the DHS director making these comments. Why not the CDC, or dept of Agriculture, or any number of the more qualified governmental agencies on this issue.
I think this is being blown way out of proportion by both the media and governemnt. Less than 100 people have died in 3 years in the most poppulated countries in the world both in terms of people and poultry, I would venture to say more people have died from being struck by lightening in the "inflicted" countries than bird flu.
Let the scientists do thier work in fighting this without having DHS coming out and telling us to get ready with duct tape everyone, the boogyman is coming.

No, no it won't.

And if it does it will only affect a few people.

I agree with the above-- probably just much ado about nothing much... a lot of scientists think that if this bug was going to mutate into a form that could pass person-to-person, it would have already done so (H5N1 has been around since 1997). But then again who knows? It's always good to be prepared. Whatever the case I doubt we're looking at something like 1918 again.

Since I do not handle live chickens and I know of no one that does, my thought would be:

OMG!!!! Avian Flu!!! AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!! GLOBAL PANDEMIC!!!!!!

oh, wait.....

OMG!!!! Flu Vaccine Shortage!!! AAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!! GLOBAL PANDEMIC!!!!!

oh, wait.....

OMG!!!! MAD COW!!! AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!! GLOBAL PANDEMIC!!!!!

But, God forbid we should tell anyone how to properly use condoms or get people off illegal IV drugs.....

GO CANUCKS!!
