Tim Hortons To Open In Kandahar

Fri Mar 10, 2006 12:10 pm

From cbc.ca http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/natio...03/08/20060308-timmys.html?ref=rss

Tim Hortons officials say they will open a store at the Kandahar military airfield in Afghanistan within the next few months ... 'I know I speak for all the men and women of the Canadian Forces when I say that I'm delighted to hear this news,' Gen. Hillier said ... "

It really is a Canadian institution now isn't it?

It's about time! Imagine the Canadian troops seeing the US servicemen going to BK, Pizza hut etc and our Canadian soldiers not being able to enjoy a good cup of timmies! Finally the travesty is over! I'm glad they saw sence and i think whoever got Tim Hortons to agree to set up shop over there deserves a huge thank you.

Well done timmies and well done Canadian Forces

Cheers

Once again it proves my theory that the Canadians are trying to take over the entire world. It's all part of a conspiracy, I tell you.

In my experience in hotspots this kind of thing is a bad idea. Westerners tend to congregate at western themed places. These then become targets. That said go Timmies, maybe our military will win some decent vehicle during role up the rim promos!

Wish they'd open up in the L.A. area. I either have to order via eBay (and pay up but wazzoo in shipping charges) or wait until someone from the midwest comes out to visit.

I count at least 22 on the Tim Hortons site and my girlfriend (a banker) read that there were 33 locations. From the Cambridge site "a great place to call home - Cambridge's 2006 population is estimated at 122,000". Also, according to the city limit signs, I have seen estimates as high as 130,000.

Ladies!
Cambridge is made up of Galt, Hespeler and Preston. Perhaps you were each looking at different statistcs. Perhaps one of your stats included the Greater Cambridge Area "the GCA" if you will. One of your statistics might also include the mini-stores or trolleys inside an Esso station or in another store.

The point is that there is enough to go around to make everyone happy.

Stop fighting.

Within 10 miles of me there are 5 Tim Hortons. They're growing quick here in Rochester, NY.

It took the fun out of driving through Ontario on the way to Michigan and getting a box of timbits...

oh well, still tradition.

BTW, is the chain named after the defenseman
who played for both the Leafs and Sabres and
was killed in an auto accident? I remember his

Your dreams will come true too Traindriver. Tim Horton's original plan was to open stores along routes that "snowbirds" from Toronto and Montreal travelled to get to their winter places in Florida.

In fact, many franchise hopefuls are actually moving to the USA to open stores, as it is becoming almost impossible to get into Tim Horton's as a new franshisee in Canada.

Oh YooYoo, you beat me to it. Yes, Tim Horton was killed in a car accident on the QEW near Hamilton, Ontario.

I can't believe that Mrs. Horton (Tim's widow) sold it for next to nothing. She could have been a VERY wealthy woman today.

YooYoo, thanks for the link. I had the pleasure of seeing
Horton play when the Leafs came to town to play the
Rangers. He was a great defenseman on those great cup-
winning Leafs teams back in the 60's.

Now I have the urge for a cup of coffee and some donuts.
I'm going to have to settle for Dunkin' Donuts for the time being.

Actually, she sold her half of the partnership, as Tim Horton was already partnered with Ron Joyce, the guy who is now the largest single shareholder in Wendy's International (the two companies merged in a true merger, not a disguised buy out). She actually took Joyce to court over the deal and there was a fair deal of evidence that Joyce was less than Kosher in his dealings with her, but she lost and he got the company.

Taste! Let me tell you about taste! When TH's serves good cappuccino plain and simple - not English Toffee Cappuccino or French Vanilla Cappuccino or somesuch rubbish - then you can talk about taste! Why on earth would you want to poison a perfectly good beverage with any artifical flavourings, let alone those two disgusting ones?

English Toffee Cappuccino!!! My stomach still heaves just seeing those words - ok, I wasn't paying attention and made the mistake of thinking that I was in a real coffee shop not a plastic imitation and it *was* in London, Ontario. You know London, the place, other than being home to the 1+ metre long black mutant ninja squirrels that roam the parks and streets terrorising unwary tourists, is just, er, very "nice".  yawn

English Toffee Cappuccino!!! An abomination both to the langauge and to coffee lovers everywhere! I'd be very surprised if there was a TH's in Quebec - surely their Franco-heritage would forbid such an outrage to good taste!

Hmm, ok, maybe I've gone over the top - my unfortunate English Toffee Cappuccino experience was my only bad one in Canada, maybe that's why it sticks in my mind .... but, why do North Americans on both sides of 48.5 N latitude (or thereabouts) insist on artificially over-flavouring perfectly good food and drinks in such totally outlandish and unnecessary ways?

English Toffee Cappuccino!!!  yuck

LOL -- I have Tim Horton's autograph buried in a trunk somewhere. My sister got it for me because she was dating a friend of his at the time. I'm older than 13.

From the enthusiastic support for Timmies on this thread, we can assume that the upcoming Tim Horton's IPO will be very successful. I was quite distressed when Wendy's bought the franchise out, but heartened that it ended up being a huge money-maker that saved their butts.

Wonder if it will ever be Canadian-owned again. Not likely, I guess.

Will there be a place outside to tie up the horses, and will you have to leave your AK-47s outside?

Do real men drink latte?

You're right. Those of us who've seen him play undertand how good he was -- and what a tragic way to end it all.

I think I'll go edit my profile and get a 13-15 designation. Then I can start saying some really outrageous things and people can just dismiss me as a snot-nosed punk. Hell, they do anyway.
