The Flashing Red Light In Your Car?

Sun Mar 12, 2006 3:06 am

I been wondering this for a while but why did automotivencompanies insist on putting one of those flashing red lights in your car and it starts flashing whenever you car is locked and off. My VW Touareg three of them one on the driver door, one near the radio and one on the front passenger door. How much battery does this little light use? Will the light ever not work? What is the point of this light. I my father Land Rover the light stays on even when the alarm is not on and the car is off. Does the light really scare people? I just don't get it, but it looks cool.  Smile
Anyway does your car have the little red flashing light? What do you think about it?

My BMW has one mounted in the dim lever for the rear view mirror, it is to show that the immobiliser is armed and as far as I am aware the flash pattern will also warn if someone has tampered with the car.
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

Mine's below the Speedo, showing the Alarm/Immobiliser is armed.

mine is the same. It works with lights when yu unlock the car, aswell. If no one has tried to open a door while the alarm was set, the car lights flash 2 times when you open them, and 3 times if someone tried to get it. On my car, a Grand Cherokee, the light blicks rapidly for 15 secs when armed and then at a slow rate. I don't see how it could be annoying.

My mothers BMW 316 and my fathers BMW 320 have a large red flashing light on the bottom of the rear view mirror. Sitting in the living room with the 2 cars on the drive is annoying when trying to watch Discoivery Wings  Smile

I call my drive the red light district :/

You can buy them as an accessory to scare Chavs away, I think they do work unless the guy really wants your car, in which case he'll know how to by-pass it.

Funny this subject should come up, I was walking back from the beach late last night and noticed a 316 BMW with a red flashing light and wondered if it was real or a fake and whether it did deter theives.

Just being a BMW would deter me, can't stand the things!

It's just a deterrent I suppose. Kind of stupid though, if a pro thief wants to steal my car he's going to regarldess of the secuirty system or flashing LEDs I have in it.

In my Ford Taurus, it's actually on the instrument panel, just below the speedometer. It's actually not a light, but it says THEFT and flashes when the car is off.

Vehicles equipped with a factory installed "theft deterrent" system have this "security" light. It indicates if the system is armed or not and if the vehicle has been tampered. The light usually flashes with a different cadence to indicate tampering.
Manually locking and closing the doors may not arm the system so the light will indicate this. If you attempt to start the engine and it does not crank, check if the light is flashing with the key in the ON position. Most security systems will not allow the starter motor to engage if the system is armed or in the "tampered" mode. Should someone open a door or hatch without the key while the system is armed, the alarm goes off and the starter motor will be disabled.
Some cars have a "coded" ignition key. The key has a programmed resistance value and the system must identify that it is the proper key being used or will not start and the security light will flash. If someone tampers with the vehicles locking system or ignition cylinder, the system will sound the horn for a period of time and shut off. When you return to the vehicle, the light may be flashing with a different interval indicating that the system detected tampering.
It is usually explained in the Owners Manual, which most never read.

I have flashing red lights in my truck. I have a siren and two-way radio, too. When the weather is crappy, I have red lights that go on the roof.  Big grin

The light won't work if you don't activate the deadlocking on your car. It will also stop working if you don't use the car for a week (maybe two??) or more so it doesn't flatten the battery.

I'm not sure about the car, but my motorcycle has a similar flashing light which deactivates after 24 hours.

No doubt! If they're good and they want it, they'll get it no matter what.

I have 3 in my car.

One below the speedo to indicate that the alarm is armed, one in the centre of the dash that shows the immobiliser is on but that one does not flash, and another on the stereo when the front is removed.
