Where Is Google Earth Centred?

Sun Mar 12, 2006 6:52 am

Anyone know where Google Earth is centred? It seems to be some small town, somewhere around the mid-western US. It can't be of much significance if it's not high-res, so I'm wondering why it was chosen:

Its intentional as the exact location you can zoom in on, Meadowbrook Apartments, Lawrence, is where the Google Earth project leader stayed while attending Kansas University in the 1980s, as well as living in the town for 15 years. Brian McClendon is also the cofounder of Keyhole Ltd, which Google bought to acquire Google Earth.

Thanks RichardPrice, I reckoned it had some significance and wondered why, as it hardly seemed the centre of the universe.

It's most likely 2 miles northwest of Lebanon, Kansas. That's where it centers when I fire it up.

How did Lawrence, KS get onto the banks of Lake Michigan?

You are zooming in too soon, you need to fire up the app and let it settle for a couple of seconds, otherwise if you immediately hit zoom when the earth appears, it hasnt centred yet and you get anywhere within a thousand miles of Lawrence (I jsut tried it half a dozen times).

If you leave it to settle before zooming in, it always hits Lawrence.

Oh oh, I was just looking at the top photo with the pin on Chicago.

That makes sense now. Cheers.  Smile

Sure enough, it is centered in on Lawrence, KS, which is ironically MY hometown!  Smile I am there for college, and will likely stay here past graduating in May. In fact, the apartment complex it is centered on, Meadowbrook (aka Ghettobrook), is about 5 minutes from my apartment and right across the street from my work, and is also where my girlfriend will be living next year. I guess I'm just that cool  Wink

That would be the geographic center of the lower 48 US states. Or about 70 miles East of where I grew up!
