Midwest Severe Weather, Be Safe

Mon Mar 13, 2006 2:17 am

Hey everybody, for those of us living in the midwest of the United States, be careful. Today there is a high chance for some very nasty weather. Last night was bad with tornados ripping throuhg Missouri and Illinois. Today will be worse apparently, I haven't seen this sort of forecast from the Storm Prediction Center in a long time.

Categorical

Tornado

Hail

Wind

Very nice of you to put this up. That said it's a pretty random thread.

Being a weather geek, what can I say.

Looking at the weather radar right now, there is a massive hail producing super cell which is about to cross the mississippi river and slam into the town of Quincy Illinois. Its moving at about 80 miles per hour, which is very fast.

You forgot the 14 inches of snow that's coming tonight just east of MSP.  bouncy

We had to deal with that last night in STL. I was down on the riverfront under the Arch when it all blew in at once. I had a hell of a time racing to our car on slanted cobblestones hah.

I'm in Lawrence, KS and it has been a crazy day, and will likely continue to be. I woke up at 8am this morning to cans rolling around by apartment parking lot, and just a few minutes later our town was hit by a tornado. Damage is widespread throughout, including on Univ. of Kansas campus. Maybe classes (and thus my hard midterm) will be cancelled tomorrow!  Smile One can hope. Damage is apparently pretty bad.

Tbar is dead on--this is not going to be a pretty day. The atmospheric setup is...well, explosive.

I'd imagine we'll see at least one violent-category tornado today, in the F4-F5 range. If we don't, it'll be because it didn't hit anything (which, don't get me wrong, I'm all for!)

God be with the Midwest, 'cause it certainly looks like the Apocalypse on the weather charts at the moment!  Wink

Things look to get interesting in places like Tulsa and St. Louis relatively soon.

The weather in this country is something else. I'm located in Madison, WI and yesterday a friend and I were chilling ON the lake ice in lawn chairs soaking in the hot-for-early-march-sun having some beers. Then today we just had a thunderstorm and the counties to the south are in a tornado watch. Then tomorrow we're supposed to get a couple inches of snow and be below freezing again for the week. WTF?!

Tornadoes on the ground near Rockford, Springfield, IL; Columbia, Springfield, Kansas City, Joplin, MO; Fayetteville, AR; Burlington, IA; Tulsa, OK. Chicagoland under a tornado watch. Storms are headed generally northeast. Cities in the paths of some of these storms (cities not currently under the gun) include: Chicago, Milwaukee, Champaign, St. Louis, and Bloomington. Good luck to all of y'all, stay safe!

I'm in Fort Wayne, Indiana and last night we had a wicked line of t-storms rumble through here. It was beautiful - we sat in our sun room until 3am watching the lightning.

Tonight it's starting to thunder quite a bit, and there's a nice red spot on radar headed towards us... Hope it's not tornadic!

I'm in the Northern Suburbs of Illinois and everything right now is north of us. More towards the WI/IL Border.

Man what a mess.

A storm SLAMMED into Springfield, IL and there are reports that a building collapsed and a group of people are trapped inside. Lots of wind, hail, and tornado damage was reported from a supercell that originated in Missouri and tracked across the Mississippi river right accross Central Illinois just north of here in Champaign, IL. I will say it was the largest storm I've ever seen. Reports were that there was hail over 2" large and numerous tornados were reported with it.

Now there's another supercell with hail reports over 2" about to cross the border into the state.

This is the most recent radar image, the storm in the lower left is the one I'm keeping an eye on, probably some time in the night it will pass through Champaign county, hopefully not right through here. This kind of severe weather outbreak is the worst because its smack in the middle of the night when everybody is in bed.

Well Springfield, IL got hammered pretty hard, thank God nobody was hurt. Here's some pictures of damage from two tornados that came through.

A few more, this time from the Lincoln, IL National Weather Service office.

The tornado reached a width of 1/2 a mile at one point. Pretty bad stuff.
