Drug Trials: Would You Take Part?

Fri Mar 17, 2006 3:55 am

Six men remain in intensive care after being taken ill during a clinical drugs trial in north-west London.
The healthy volunteers were testing an anti-inflammatory drug at a research unit based at Northwick Park Hospital when they suffered a reaction.

Full story from BBC News

Volunteers are paid up to £150 a day to take part in clinical trials.

So my question is have you ever taken part in any trials? Would you?

I did think about it a while ago, but after this episode, the answer is no. Obviously there would be side effects to trialling any drugs, but not to this extent. There must be something wrong with the drug if it's effected these six men so much.

I don't think I'd risk it. I'd heard adverts on the radio for Parexel on a number of occassions and, although I fit the bill, I never felt I'd act on them. I expect companies conducting clinical trials will experience greater difficulties in recruiting volunteers now.

Hopefully they'll jack the fee up for people willing to be tested. If this turns out to be the case i'd be more than willing to sign up!

More accurately, you'd expect drug companies to be looking out for anti-animal testing protestors to volunteer for drug testing. That way, instead of simply moaning about the use of animals in drug testing they could be more proactive in producing other ways of drug testing. Somehow i'd imagine these people would be less than willing to volunteer, yet more than willing to take a drug that could potentially save their life after it had passed the testing stage.

The first thing to bear in mind is that something like this happening is exceptionally unusual, even unprecedented. If people are scared off from volunteering to undergo drug trials, then medical research is going to be badly set back.

That being said, would I do it? No. But that's not because of this event.
