Speed Limit On Belgian And Dutch Roads?

Fri Mar 17, 2006 4:07 am

Here are a few questions for the Beligian and Dutch A.netters.

On Saturday a friend and I want to drive to France (Lille) to get a few cans or bottles of the in France new introduced Coca Cola Black (a short stop in the Netherlands is in order as well ). We have to drive through the Netherlands and Belgium and since we will take my father's BMW we are planning to speed a bit.

What are the speed limits on Belgian and Dutch motorways?

Are radar speed check usual?

How high are the fines? Is it expensive to drive 40/50 kph over the speed limit?

What is when the police stops me for speeding, do I - as a German with a German registered car - have to pay directly or can I tell them that I pay later? And do I have to pay indeed (can the German police force me to pay) or can I trow the speeding ticket into the trash bin at home?

Any feedback is welcome!

Patrick

I was in Belgium recently in a UK registered car, I think the speed limit is 130kph, we were cruising about 160-180kph on the main motorway to Brussels with no problems (though this was at night time).

DOn't know about Belgium

Speed on Dutch motorways are 120kph. The police does give a 7 or 8 kph margin. That's why the speed at the motorways tend to average 130/135. Large sections of the motorway around urbanized areas are limited to 100 or even 80. There are loads of speed traps. Fixed, mobile and unmarked police vehicles.

In the Netherlands you will loose your driving license when you go 50kph too fast, as well as a heavy fine. This does not apply to foreigners though. Instead, for speeds above 30kph your fine will be 8 euros per km you exceeded the limit.

Since you are from Germany you are in luck. You will not have to pay on the spot, instead the Dutch justice system trusts the German system sufficiently that the fine will be paid. Had you been, say, Polish, you would have had to pay on the spot. Please note though, if you break the rules here they are going to be reported to Flensburg. So you will gain points on your license.

I do not know fines below 30kph. You would not like them though.

Radar detectors are illegal, and some of the (unmarked) police cars have radar-detector detectors. They will confiscate the detector and slap a fine over you. If you have to use your mobile, hands free is mandatory.

In the Netherlands you have to be careful: speed limit is 120 km/h but when you see little red/white signs on the side of the road it's 100 km/h. Those signs are attached to the distance indicators every 100 mtrs.

If you see a different speed indicated on the signs overhead the road that's the maximum speed. That's the case around the large cities where they check your distance versus time and send you a fine later if you were too fast.

If you exceed the speed limit by, for example, 40 kph and get nabbed by the Dutch police, it'll cost you €260.00 - you can buy a lot of exotic tobacco for that. Other than that I can't add to Peter's information.

Have fun and drive safely.

You are right, it's better to drive a bit slower and spend the money for useful things than for paying a fine.  Wink

Just now on the 9 o'clock news on the radio: Dutch police are clamping down very hard on motorists who exceed the speed limit driving past road works. No less than 3000 motorists were caught out today. And the police patrol at weekends too. Be very careful, the speed limits are often 90 kph and sometimes 70 kph.

The speed limit in Belgium is 120 km/h on the motorways. Chances of getting caught speeding are smaller than they are in The Netherlands, but if you do get caught, the fines are hefty. For your 40 / 50 km/h think along the lines of 500 Euros, to be paid on the spot if you're a foreigner.

Like in The Netherlands, radar detectors are illegal, and mobiles can only be used hands-free.

Now does that mean 500 Euro cash, or can you charge that on a Credit Card. Also what if you dont have 500 on you(no Credit cards)?

Who cares how much the fine is! Just find out the speed limit and stick to it! It's like you want to be caught and are preparing to have the exact amount of cash on you.

I got caught for speeding (82kph in a 50 zone). 2 points on my licence and an off-the-spot fine of €80. Arrived about 3 weeks later. It's my fault and aint been caught speeding since (probably because I'm more careful with my speed int he first place)!! Rather spend that €80 on anything else than give it to the Government!

I hate the dutch speed limit. While I love the country and love to be there I hate to drive around there myself.
My sister brought me to AMS and got caught with 107! in a 100 zone....
She got mail later stating that she should pay a ridiculous 23.
Needless to say that the letter ended up in the bin!

What I last wrote about are temporary speed restrictions imposed to protect motorway maintenance workers along the stretch of motorway that is being worked on. These stretches of motorway are also often narrower than one is used to. There is something in it. Better safe than sorry.

Wink think I got it. Anyway it was quite strange on the way to Amsterdam.
Although there was the normal 120 kph speed limit people seemed to be driving even less.
It's so horrible slow to go 120 in a nice new Audi A4 Avant....
even 160 is not feeling fast at all.
Argh

My theory: Dutch people have this slow speed limit cause they are anxious that one might realize how small the country is  Wink : HEy, look it took me 2 and more hours to drive through the Netherlands Big grin

Actually, this DOES apply to foreigners, too. Though you won't loose your driving license forever, the police will take your drivers license away from you for some time, usually a couple of days, until a prosecutor has taken a look at the case.

Ok guys, looks like we have a relaxed ride with the cruise control set to 135 or so tomorrow. It sucks to drive so slow in a 5 series BMW but I don't fancy to pay several hundred Euro.

radar checks in Holland are, mark my words, *very* usual. Unfortunatly, you can't listen to the radio that tells you excactly where they are. The national speed limit on the highway is 120 km/h, but if there's no check everyone will do around 140/150 km/h. So, if everyone slows down, you'll know what to do!

No they do not do this with foreigners. Only with Dutch nationals will the driving license be taken away for a while. That is also why the fines for foreigners are slighly higher.

My advice: DON'T speed in the netherlands or belgium!

Especially since you are German... The netherlands are a great country, but a nightmare for car drivers. Trajectcontrole (Section control, measures your average speed over several kilometres), speed traps on motorways, high fines.

I would stick to the rules in the netherlands. Last time I visited a friend of mine in Leiden, I took the A-3 from Cologne... The last 60km to the dutch border, everybody was driving around 200kph. Then, 500metres before the border, everybody was braking hard...

Belgium is rather infamous for extremely high fines, too.

So I would only drive fast in Germany.

You might want to take a look at this police report (search for 'Snelheidduivels verliezen rijbewijs')

So, Patrick, try to stay under 170 c.q. 150 kmh  Smile

It is not legally possible to revoke a foreign drivers license, nor is it possible to get "points in Flensburg" when you drive too fast in another coutry. However, dutch authorities my forbid you driving in the netherlands with your drivers license. As soon as you cross the border to Germany, you can once again drive as much as you want.

Been doing some checking around.

In NL anyone driving 50kph too fast automatically gets its license suspended immediately. However, for foreigners this is not done automatically, but the officier van justitie (OvJ) has to decide on it.

For speeding offences most of the times the OvJ decides to give the license back. Reason for that is that the OvJ has no use for foreign licenses. A Dutch license can be used to track past offences and to add marks on it.

The reason the driving license in your article was taken from the German, was not becasue of the speed. Had he only been speeding he would most likely have kept the license but with a very big fine. The reason he got his license suspended was because he was pissed. He was a direct threat to himself and others on the street, and in those cases no OvJ would have kept him going.

@TheSontagg
The driver license will not be 'revoked', just taken away for a limited period of time. That also means that you can not drive in your own country, since your driver license still is in the hands of foreign police. This really is legal and can happen. Of course, if you don't think that's the case, I suggest you give it a try, should be fun

This depends on whether the drivers license itself is a "requirement" for driving or whether it only serves clarification purposes. I would guess you could just obtain a preliminary new drivers license in Germany, so that you are still allowed to drive in Germany.

All I can do is echo what was said above- be VERY careful with the automatic cameras. Even in the cities they have them (off the main motorways). So basically, you are never off the hook.. Sorry for the bad news

The Netherlands is a very car unfriendly country, its the bike addiction I think..
Now it should be "IFLYDCA"
