it will be great - New Zealand brought this in over a year ago , not long after Ireland , I went home a couple of weeks ago and it was so nice to be able to go the the pub without needing to have a shower when I got home - wish they would do it here in Belgium

I'm in support too. I don't mind being around a smoker in a quiet pub or whatever, but I can't stand it when the pub is full of smoke and your clothes come out smelling of smoke when you leave.

We've had a smoking ban in bars, restaurants etc. in Sweden since June last year, and I think it's great. Finally you can wear the same clothes again without washing them  Smile And even if I like a cigarette when I am out drinking I still think this ban is a good thing.

Prepare to take up smoking laddie! That's were all the fun happens here now, outside pubs with all the skinny girls smirting (smoking and flirting) with the guys.

I've known non-smoking guys to borrow a fag just to chat up a girl.

Me too. I can't wait until the Dutch government has enough cojones to ban smoking in bars and restaurants in this country. We haven't even non-smoking areas in restaurants!

I am all in favor of it. Your rights end where those of another begin, and I do not want to have to go into a pub and breathe toxic, reeking air. One is free to foul up the air when somewhere where there are no non-smokers around. A pub is a public place, not the private property of those customers that smoke.

Having given up smoking now for 3 years I can sympathize with people who say they have to change their clothes due to the smell of smoke after visiting a pub, however the same applies to me now as my clothes usually smell of cooking after a visit to a pub. This I believe shows the problem was not only with the smokers but also with the publicans who should improve their venilation systems.
I just feel it is intolerant to have a complete ban, and there should be smoking and non smoking areas as there was when smoking was a pastime of the majority, unlike today .

That sucks... as a smoker I think the Scottish ban is going too far completley banning smoking in bars, etc, and I think laws like the ones here in Qatar are the best way to go:

-No smoking in closed public places (e.g. Malls, etc)
-You can only smoke in designated areas in resturants, etc.

The bad part of Qatar's smoking laws:
10,000QR ($2740) fine for throwning cigarettes out of your car's window! This is to stop literring due to cigarettes being thrown from windows and to control litter properly. I personally think its an insane amount to fine someone, the law is close to Singapore's equally insane one!

Even though I've never smoked I thought the smoking ban here was going a bit far, but seeing how well it's worked I feel now it was absolutely the right decision.

Smokers complained at first and it took them time to get used to it, but that's all died down now and it's amazing how it's been completely accepted.

I was in Italy recently and out of curiosity went into a couple of the smoking rooms which are now provided in bars and clubs. These are an unbelieveable health hazard: the smoke was thick and it was almost impossible to breathe in them.

If I'm abroad now and see someone lighting up beside me I instinctively think "They shouldn't be doing that!". Just think back to the time when people could smoke on planes and in cinemas: once it settles-in in Scotland, smoking in pubs and clubs will seem just as odd.

It was one the best things this government has ever done:

98% in support of smoking ban: poll

28 March 2005

On the eve of the first anniversary of the introduction of the smoking ban in public places, the Office of Tobacco Control has released findings of a poll showing overwhelming approval.

98% of those polled said they thought workplaces were healthier and that support came from smokers as well as non-smokers.

The poll, conducted by independent research company, TNS MRBI, also showed that 96% thought the law was successful, including 89% who are smokers.

New York City put in it's total indoor smoking ban 2 years ago, only excluding private housing units and I think hotel rooms. My home state of New Jersey will have it's own similar ban as of April 15th, but also excluding the gaming areas of casinos in Atlantic City (causing some arguements from many bar owners).
These bans are more about protecting others, including staff, from secondhand smoke rather than chasing out smokers. Many people have ashtma or other respitory problems that are aggrivated by others smoking. There are also fire safety issues as well as cleaner facilities. This is much of the reasoning used for banning smoking on aircraft by most countries over the last 15 years.

As you probably know, here in Italy we introduced this ban more than a year ago and even though we had some negative reactions from the smokers in the first days, I would say that today this rule has been widely accepted.

Now, when I enter in a restaurant abroad and I smell smoke I’m every time shocked as first reaction… vomit  vomit  vomit

....so if it works in Italy it should work in any other country…!!! bigthumbsup

In the area of Switzerland where I live, Ticino, we had to vote last week-end about a law to ban smoke in restaurants, bars and discos. It's actually not a total ban: restaurants with separate rooms equipped with the appropriate ventilation system may create rooms for smokers.

The law passed with about 80% of people voting for it.

My boss is one of those people who smokes 2+ packs of cigarettes per day, and he's never been so angry. He's threatening the world that he will never go to restaurants again (yeah right) and that he will purchase his cigarettes abroad in order not to give the Swiss country the taxes he pays by buying them here. Furthermore he says that they should also ban bad body smell in restaurants. Absolutely out of his mind  Wink

I think it's a good idea to ban smoke like many countries are doing. The smell is disgusting and of course it's unhealthy.

Tell me about it. A mild cold in sunny London, turned into broncho-pneumonia after an hour or two in a London pub. Rushing home through LHR, with smoke galore, was not a nice farewell to the UK. I have never been so happy to get on a plane in order to get home.

In South Africa we have strict anti-tobacco laws, to the extent that tobacco companies are not even allowed to sponsor events, etc. Tobacco advertising is also banned. However, we do have designated enclosed smoking areas in most restaurants and public places.

This I totally agree with, except I'd make it 100,000QR. Several huge forest fires have been down to idiots throwing lit butts out of the car window. Throwing litter is just ignorant, and that includes the 2 hillybilly local cops I watched the other day thowing the wrapping of a new pack out of one window, and the empty packet out of the other window of their patrol car.

As a non smoker, I always thought that there should be some middle ground on this, but the last meal I had at a restaurant (most restaurants here don't even have non smoking sections) we were still eating when the next table all lit up and we got a nice cloud of smoke to go with dinner. It's people like that who make me think "well screw you then, you deserve to get smoking banned."

CONGRATULATIONS to the Canton of Ticino ! It is a small step for the world, but a gigantic step for (smoke-filled) Ticino, and a good and considerable one for Switzerland. There will be a public vote in the Canton of Zurich either this or next year which is expected to be won, and another one in Geneva of which I am NOT sure at all. I love Geneva and would like to see the "Republic (and Canton) of Geneva liberated !

Haha... I don't know about you but not many people carry shishas around with them. The law here I think is effective: no smoking in closed public places other than designated areas, and in resturants there has to be a smoking section and a non-smoking section.

"tolerance" in reality has lead either to non-smoker-zones being the least desirable parts of public places or else to owners declaring to be unable to meat that obligation due to "space-problems". The central part of bars and restaurants usually was "tolerant" which meant a full-power-smoking-zone.

Congrats to Scotland and the Swiss Canton of Ticino. I hope that this will be inroduced in entire Switzerland soon. When a smoker says that other odours must be banned as well then it is only stupid. Body or cooking smell can probabely be unpleasent but it does not harm me like smoke does. You can simply not compare apple with pears. The argument that we non-smokers (BTW the majority of population) are not forced to go into restaurants or bars, filled with smoke, is nonsense. We don't have any other possibilities. For example, here in Zurich there are about 2000 restaurants and bars but only 35 are smoke free (at the moment).

In most of the resturants i've been to, the smoking section is the one at the back while the non-smoking sections are the ones near the windows. It should not be cancelled, if I want to go to a resturant I want to be able to enjoy a cigarette after my meal in the smoking section, where it will not bother anyone else.

I'm all for smoking in designated areas, but to say that people should not be allowed to get drunk in a bar does not make any sense at all to put it nicley.

it is the same, just different circumstances. In aereas like the Arabian Gulf States, the tables along the windows can get rather hot so that those in the background are the preferable ones. While in cold Zurich, those along the windows are nice.
-
Another point is "open" restaurants, be they outside the building or with large open windows or a very good airconditioning. There, I think it is perfectly OK if smokers are allowed to do what they like to do.

Smoking is now officially banned! Woohoo!

Just back from my local and for the first time EVER I DO NOT smell like an ash tray!! And the pub is just as busy it seems, with nobody moaning about not being able to have a fag. This is great for us - E,W and NI get on board.
