St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, is one of Christianity's most widely known figures.

The History of the Holiday
The First Parade
St. Patrick's Day is celebrated on March 17, his religious feast day and the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for thousands of years.

On St. Patrick's Day, which falls during the Christian season of Lent, Irish families would traditionally attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon. Lenten prohibitions against the consumption of meat were waived and people would dance, drink, and feast—on the traditional meal of Irish bacon and cabbage.

The first St. Patrick's Day parade took place not in Ireland, but in the United States. Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched through New York City on March 17, 1762. Along with their music, the parade helped the soldiers to reconnect with their Irish roots, as well as fellow Irishmen serving in the English army.

Over the next thirty-five years, Irish patriotism among American immigrants flourished, prompting the rise of so-called "Irish Aid" societies, like the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick and the Hibernian Society. Each group would hold annual parades featuring bagpipes (which actually first became popular in the Scottish and British armies) and drums.

Completely and totally unrelated, but what exactly is the reason for this:

Lenten prohibitions against the consumption of meat

. I was reading that about 2/3 of US Bishops have issued special dispensation today for this and it got me wondering.

Also, being 1/2 Irish myself, living just outside Boston, having worked in South Boston which is about 75% Irish, I think I'm good, Kirkie. He might be more offended by you flipping off a church sign, but that's just my take.

It's shite being Scottish! We're the lowest of the low, the scum of the fucking Earth. The most wretched miserable servile pathetic trash that was ever shat on civilization. Some people hate the English. I don't. They're just wankers. We, on the other hand, are colonized by wankers. Can't even find a decent culture to get colonized by. We're ruled by effete assholes. It's a shite state of affairs to be in, Tommy, and all the fresh air in the world won't make any fucking difference!

Never a truer word was spoken???

As for me, I spent St. Paddy's day in a pub that doesn't even market itself as an 'Irish Pub' such as O-Neils or other bollocks. But spent my evening singing away to Irish songs and Irish dancing with a mad croud of rowdy people who just wanted to have a good time. It was a laugh and I think I deserved my 3 guinness hats.

bla blah blah to anyone who says I shouldn't be having a laugh because i'm not Irish.
