Your Car Preferences: Saloons Or Estates

Sedans or Stationwagons to you guys in Canada/US

Ok, so it's nearly time to head off to Germany to buy my new (used!) car, which is likely to be an Audi A6. The question is, do I get the normal 4 door, or the 5 door Avant? I don't have kids, so carrying loads of junk isn't an issue. Your thoughts/comments would be appreciated.

a station-car is the far better option. If you for instance have something small but very long, it is easy to load. By re-arranging your personal mess you also can load relatively bulky stuff. My brother, just half a year before his death, when discussing about the inevitable, recommended a change from my small car to a station, explaining all the advantages, including a better turning-round-ability, a fuel-consumption which on longer stretches is even lower than the one of the small car, etc. I bought my first station in early 1995 and got my second a year ago, and can say that he was totally right .

Where do 4x4 's fit in? (I'm a girl so I am entitled to be a bit ignorent!!)

Are they Stationwagons ?

I'm on my 8th Suzuki (presently a Jimney) but soon to be replaced with yet another Vitara - Side kicks in USA ?

Well, the Audi A6 is expensive to buy and run, but being one of the best-built executive estates you get get a lot of car for your money. And it is a bea-u-ti-ful car.

Personally, if I can afford, I'd go for its little brother, the A4 Avant.

My next car - end of this year, beginning of next year - is certainly going to be an estate. I don't do much day-to-day driving, but I make quite a few long trips every year. Estate cars exude a feeling of comfort and space, and you can fill 'em up with all sorts of junk. Besides that, my boyfriend and I are also keen gardeners and estate cars are handier when visiting garden centres.

You've got me thinking, I hadn't thought about an Audi. Thanks.

Regards, Robert

I suppose as they have 3 or 5 doors they-re counted as estates.

Mir, that's funny.

So far it looks like estates are coming out ahead, which is what I'd originally thought. Thanks for the replies so far.

Definatley Saloons... I find estates and hatchbacks ugly - look at the difference between the Mercedes E-Class Saloon and Estate for example...

SUV's have really replaced the 'station wagon' or 'estate' car, especially in the USA. The minivan, while it also replaced the station wagon and it's practically, was never considered really 'macho' enough by most men and many women so they quickly moved to the SUV. Hatchbacks, especially 'five door' hatchbacks, are still far more popular in Europe rather than in the USA, despite their advantages, especially if you regularly transport stuff, even if single.

I'm on my 8th Suzuki (presently a Jimney) but soon to be replaced with yet another Vitara - Side kicks in USA ?

The Vitara is sold as the Grand Vitara in the United States, the Sidekick was discontinued a number of years ago.
I have a Subaru Forester, which is sort of a neither-fish-nor-fowl vehicle. It's technically considered a small SUV but is more like a tall wagon (estate).
As for the relative popularity of the sedan vs. wagon in the United States, it's worth noting that Dodge sells two cars built on the Chrysler 300 platform - the Magnum wagon and the Charger sedan. The Magnum came out first and sold well, but now that the Charger's on the market Magnum sales have dropped off precipitously.

Naw I think the sedan is better. The Avant is small and doesn't offer much advantage over the sedan. If you're into Audi, I'd go with the A6 Avant or the Allroad (basically a beefy, awd A6) Now my personal favourite is the Volvo V70XC (Cross Country). It's a wonderful awd wagon and with the optional 3rd row seat allows it to take the place of a mini van.

I perfer SUVs. Not the huge ones like Expedtions, Surburbans ect.. But Pathfinder
ML, Lexus all are nice. My favourite as many here know already in the Volkswagen Touareg.

I would go for the sedan, Audi A6 is a great car!
