Kitchenware For Idiots

Tue Mar 21, 2006 1:08 am

Ok - my turn for an A.net Grumpy Old Git rant.  grumpy

Today's bugbear is this current obsession with kitchenware here in the UK to have the bleedin' obvious written all over it. Its one thing to have a pots with coffee, tea, sugar written on them - fair enough - but now they seem to be spelling the obvious over everything. Cheesboards with "cheese" written large over them, plates with things such as "pasta" "rice" "salads" or "yummy bloody food" plastered all over them. Knives and forks with "EAT" written over them, toasters with "toast" plastered on the side. Its just getting stupid. On Saturday whilst shopping for some bits I saw egg cups with "boiled egg" written over them. Thank god for that. I'd always wondered what you were supposed to put in those small bloody egg sized cup things. Thanks for spelling it out for me  Yeah sure

The question is WHY ? Why ruin perfectly good crockery and utensils by doing this ? Is it a health and safety thing and the manufacturers are so scared of lawsuits from incompetent cooks that they have to spell everything out as a warning. And as if this isn't bad enough its not even cheap tat that has this problem. The bloody egg cup was 45 quid !!  Wow!

A message to anyone planning on buying this sort of crap. If you need a bloody big description on the kitchen item to tell you what it is for, you really shouldn't go near the kitchen.  grumpy

I wouldn't mind so much, but if you choose not to buy this stuff, everything else seems to have some TV chef's bloody signature on at the moment. Jamie bloody pukka twat Oliver designer this, Anthony Worrell boring Tv chef Thompson designer that. Its driving me mad. Can't they just produce something that doesn't have a chef's name or its purpose spelled out over it?

And if this wasn't bad enough, its spreading to the bathroom now. Trying to get some bits for the new bathroom at the weekend we were faced with laundry baskets with "Tidy" written large all over them, toilet brushes with "clean" on them. Writing all over bog brushes for god's sake !!

Anyone else find this bloody annoying ? Is it becoming a habit in other countries too ?

Enough is enough. Time for  grumpy   old  bastards like me to firebomb John Lewis, House of Fraser et all until they stop selling this muck.

Rant over. I feel better now.

I don't think the idea is the provision of operating instructions. It's just a design style! We have a chopping board with 'chop', 'cut', and 'slice' written on it. If I need instructions on the thing, I probably shouldn't be using it!

Look the way I see it, in my house, a plate is a plate, and i'll use it to eat whatever kind of food I want  silly

Same goes for dishes etc  Wink

John Lewis, House of Fraser

They are supposed to be 'posh' shops, so you could say they are selling "designer" crockery  Wink

I quite like the style actually.

It's ok man, just stick to your brown and yellow flowered wallpaper, brown carpets, wireless, pipe and slippers and you'll be fine!

But does that mean that colours are silly too, because they are pointless?

If people are stupid enough to buy them, credit to the retailers for making money from these people!

No that's completely different.

Anyway, stop using logic when I'm ranting  Wink

Ha Ha Ha . . .

Article in Yesterday's Anchorage Daily Bullshit (I mean Newpaper) . . .

The dumbing down of cookbooks . . . .

Apparently, simply saying, in a recipe "beat two eggs" is no longer sufficient. Cookbooks authors are now writing such things as, "crack two eggs in a bowl, dispose of the shells. With a fork, whip the eggs for thirty seconds"  crazy  crazy  !

Exactly ! Although over here that would read:

"crack two eggs in a bowl (thats the round bowl shaped thing marked "eggs, flour and other things for making cakes"), dispose of the shells in the container marked "rubbish". With a fork (marked "fork"), whip the eggs for thirty seconds"

That's probably because some bloody moron would just crack the eggs into a bowl, shells as well then sue the publishers as they cut their mouths whilst eating scrambled egg
