Old Volvo Mechanic In Los Angeles

Fri Mar 24, 2006 10:25 am

We have a 1971 Volvo P1800, and we can't find a good mechanic. We had a good sweedish mechanic, Ronny, but he died. Anyone know of a worthy and reliable mechanic in LA?

Thanks.

What part of SoCal are you?

I know of two good mechanics; one in Northridge, the other in Pasadena. Not sure if I'd call them 'specialist' with any particular model but they've done superb jobs with my cars as well as friends and family that go to them.

Sako's on Parthenia, just west of Reseda Bl. in Northridge.

Del Mar Radiator on Del Mar & Allen in Pasadena.

Best rates I've seen and I know Del Mar gives free estimates. They are honest mechanics and if your mechaniclly inclined, they'll tell you what the problem is and how to fix it yourself. They are a very busy shop so it's not like they are desperate to gouge every customer like so many shops out there.

I'm just south of Hancock Park and Wilshire, (officially called Windsor Village), just east of Western, if that helps at all.

I know exactly where you are, this should be a breeze for you...

Just go down to Pico Blvd and Roxbury intersection (right across the street from the Simon Wiesenthal Center Museum) -just before Century City- and southwest edge of Beverly Hills... a Union 76 Station and ask to speak to Curtis.. explain nothing else to no one else. He'll hook you right up! He's a simple down in dirt/grease kinda guy, but trust me..knows his sh*t! He'll even do work (he'll even do work off the property--on his own and save you more bucks, if need be).

I passed through your neighborhood back in January. Very nice old homes in that area.

I did have a mechanic work on my car car once on the SW corner of La Cienega & Santa Monica, or was it La Brea?
I get the two mixed up but I am sure it was La Cienega.
Anyhow, one guy there seemed really knowledgable. His name is Carmy, not sure if he is still there.
It's one of those gas station/repair shops.

My Grandparents used to live at what is now the Simon Wiesenthal Center Museum. They both died 20+ years ago.

Yes it is! They moved there back in the early 1960s from Indiana when there youngest child (my mother) left for college. One died in 1979, the other in 1980. I have vague memories flying out from Chicago on AA 707s & DC-10s to visit. Most kids at that age would have considered Disneyland the highlight of such a trip but for me was seeing the Startky & Hutch Ford Gran Torino parked out front of the 20th Century Fox studios.  Cool

My trip around the world starts in May. Expect a trip report sometime in July. It wont be a long trip though. Moscow looks like it may cost me more $$$ than expected.  Sad

Yup..just right up the street (over the hump)! Tragically, you just barely see past the walls and crap now, all the lots have turned into fortresses. not from terrorist..just loonies looking get even for being dissed off projects.

Sorry to here that, but hey, just hook up with a local russian skirt and let her show you 'Moscow on the cheap' so you don't pay sucker prices everywhere you go!
