Pray For Central Europe! Floods Again... (pics)

Wed Mar 29, 2006 12:40 pm

Hi guys,
I am here, in sunny Costa Rica, while my belowed city and country are flooding. I feel sooooo helpless!!!

Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Germany and Austria are all flooding now because of the melting snow and rains affecting Central Europe now. Please pray so that the terrible catastrophe that happened in 2002 wont happen again in Central Europe.
Today, a 5year old boy drowned in the Czech Rep, while in Poland and Germany, two people are dead already. RIP!!

Some pics from Prague and Czech Republic for you:

Wow, that's pretty wild. It doesn't look too devistating from those pics, and lets hope it stays that way.

The problem with photos like that is that tehy don't show you what all that water is doing to what's in your basement, or what 3ft of water inside your car engine will do. My daughter's boyfriend lost both his car and his truck last year durng all the flooding in NH, as well as a bunch of stuff he had stored in his basement and garage. For a college student that's alot of $$$.

My thoughts are with everyone in the flood zone.

Back in the summer of 96 or 97 I was in Poland during the heavy flooding. I toured the outer areas of the city of Opole after the water had receded. The Polish Army was still ferrying evacuees around in trucks. You could see from the stains on the stucco over some of the houses just out high the water had reaches. Of course the Odra (Oder) River is one of the major rivers in the country, and the swell travelled further. I remember the sandbags in Wroclaw. It was quite devastating, and I also remember the drive to raise money for the victims with CD sales (from celebrities) and what not. Central Europe seems precariously vulnerable to such flooding.

I hope those major screw ups and mismanagement back in 2002 (e.g. flooding of the Prague metro system, late evacuation of the zoo, etc.) was a lesson enough for those responsible to remember while making decisions this time.

It's bad, it's more often than I'd like, but it's nowhere near what's going on in Bangladesh and some other places in SE Asia year after year.

you'll see ads for those really "good deals" on used cars few months later

Wow, that looks pretty bad. I hope not too many people are affected by it.

So far it only looks bad, with only very few people being affected by the floods directly (property), other. The catch is, the winter has been the longest in last 30 or 40 years, with huge amounts of snow still in the border mountains (all 3 major Czech rivers spring from these mountains and flow inland).
If the snow melts really fast, we'll have a problem.

Hamburg had it really hard recently. Not because of floodings, but because of a Tornado which whipped through parts of the Harburg region. There are also quite a few tornado warnings in parts of Northern Germany.

What do you expect? We had a winter with quite a bit of snow in the Alps and other mountainous areas of Europe (remember the roofds of buildings collapsing in Germany and Poland because of the snow?).
Now the weather got warmer, due to the low pressure areas moving again (spring time storms any one?) we'll have a lot of rain as well, added to the water from the melting snow from the mountains.
If e.g. somebody in Cologne or else along the river Rhine or the Danube complains about floods, I feel like slapping him left and right, because he knowingly bought land in an area which has been regularly flooded since centuries.

During the night the authorities evacuated about 10,000 people from south Moravian town of Znojmo (Dyje/Thaya River), further 20,000 will follow - the flood is expected to hit them this morning because the dams upstream are already flowing over
Also some suburbs of Prague were evacuated (Vltava River).
More rain is expected later today  Sad

I partly agree. But then, floodings seem to become more frequently and bigger these days... Oh, sure it has nothing to do with climate changes  Yeah sure
And there are people who didn't buy there land but inherited it - well, that's tough luck I guess.

I'm just glad the river in our town (Havel) will never cause a flood. More likely it will run dry.

However, I hope the best for all those people living in affected areas.

The problem is that people have encroaching on the European rivers over the last 10 years (with the advent of heavy building machinery), claiming land that was before regularly flooded for part of the year(Flussauen), changing it from marshy fields into construction land. Also, forcing the rivers into dikes and changing their flow to make them easier passable for river freight barges caused the water to flow faster and reduced the possibility the river had to spread out during floods.
In short, humans settled on land which used to be part of the river bed.

Even more of a reason why they should have known about the flooding.

If I do pray, what will God do? Freeze the water? Make it evaporate? I'm getting a bit bored of people saying 'pray for this, pray for that' on this board. It's usually just a plea for attention (and trying to get attention is fine, just don't keep asking for me to pray - I'm busy enough as it is).

Smile Funny!!! I dont pray either, I dont belive in God to start with. But I guess it was the best way and shortest way of expressing like: "Your thoughts with...".
