Is This Website Badly Designed Or Is It Me?

Wed Mar 29, 2006 2:51 pm

Need some opinions on this topic...
This local website came up in conversation recently:
http://www.vsv.cape.com/~harharb/main.html

...more than one friend/aquaintance said they were impressed by it...but I (having worked with computers for 30+ yrs) thought otherwise...so I replied "I guess we all have different opinions of what makes a website look good...that one has many of the common no-no's from web design books...too many links, too much white space, too many varieties of text size, sound that can't be silenced, background that interferes with text, etc..."

Someone replied "turn down your speakers."

I then wrote "A website should always allow one to mute any sound from it since a user may well be doing something else using speakers at that time, such as listening to podcasts or streaming audio/video, etc. as I tend to do"

So...given that users of A.Net tend to be a bit more Net savy, who is more accurate about this site?

I really thought the site was more towards the amatuerish end of the scale...and the site doesn't really work on Opera and chews up 20% of my system compared to usual 2 to 5% in Opera...

even though i am a fan of flashing, professional looking websites, content is what matters. however, your website caused popups in camino on my mac, firefox on my pc, and was rather annoying. i quit the browser quickly thereafter, and i was going to give you an honest impression, but as a casual visitor, they would feel the same way..

I started loading this and IE6 blocked a popup, It seems like it should be a professional website for what it's used for but I didn't like the layout, nor the frame design... That's just my oppinion though

It's user hostile. A person goes there and it's like WTF, what is this?

From an information mapping standpoint, it's horrid. Information needs to be organized, not just dumped onto the page.

There's a lot of crap out there on the internet, and it seems that everyone just accepts it the way it is -- some even consider it quality work.  Yeah sure

It has frames. Frames haven't been used in web design for years now. As soon as I saw that I closed it. YUCK!

I think you might want to ask the mods to amend your title - on first glance I misread it as meaning this website ie ANet  Smile

Quoting Eadster (Reply 5):

I still see them on occasion, but used in a slightly different manner...anyway, maybe I'm not up with the times....what replaced them? When one needs to keep certain info on screen at all times while the rest of page may scroll, how does one handle that?

I noticed the pop-up but not while in IE, as Google toolbar blocked it...it was the current temp data...why use a pop-up for that? I agree...not good!

And had I meant A.Net, I would have started the thread in Site Related...and/or used the title "Is A.net ...." etc.

I'm not a web design expert, but as a web user, I can't stand that site. There's waaaaayyyyy too much on that main page. If I were looking for a specific link or something, I'd give up very quickly. They need to make the main page much simpler and more organized, with clear links to different aspects of the site.

Quote: "This site best viewed with display monitor set from your control panel at 800x600 pixel resolution."

Then it has an image that is 900 pixels wide  Yeah sure 1024x768 should be the recommended...

As you said, the site is absolutely aweful. Its one big huge page (which loaded in the middle instead of the top?) The content needs to be split up into seperate pages instead of making the user scroll through a huge page of content.

Also why is there links to anti-spyware , hotmail and yahoo on a harbour website? No wonder the list of links is huge! 90% are irrelevent.

Also all the images appear to have been scaled down through html size tags rather than generating a thumbnail.

The site is so amature its not funny. I might email them and offer my services Big grin

FYI: The site is/was created by one guy who is the Harbormaster for the town..I'll give him credit for trying to provide more info/pix/content than would be allowed on the "official" town site (run by a third-party service), but the way it was done makes it look more like a MySpace blog page, IMHO.
