Phantom - The Las Vegas Spectacular.

Thu Mar 30, 2006 3:47 pm

http://www.playbill.com/news/article/98770.html

When it begins performances in June at The Venetian Resort in the Nevada desert, the Andrew Lloyd Webber smashzilla won't be called The Phantom of the Opera, it'll be Phantom—The Las Vegas Spectacular.

Two words: Oy vey.

That enough right there was enough to do me in. Then I read more of the article.

Broadway stars Brent Barrett (Annie Get Your Gun, Chicago) and Anthony Crivello (Kiss of the Spider Woman) will alternate performances as The Phantom due to the vocal demands of the score — and because 10 shows a week will be presented.

Almost a double yuck. Anthony Crivello *might* be interesting to see, I kind of doubt it, admittedly, but Brent Barrett...spare me and spare the rest of you.
Also, Ted Keegan is in the chorus of the show and I saw him perform the role of Phantom on tour a few years ago. I have a feeling he will be the understudy for the role...and "yuck" on him, too.

Also, the show will be cut from 2 hours and 30 minutes to 95 minutes with no intermission...and no songs will be left out. The London full original cast recording clocks in at about 100 minutes so I guess something along the lines of this could work, but I am wondering how they will be working with clarity and continuity of the show in a shortened version.

Also, this begs the question of..."how will the trick with the chandelier work?"

I'm totally opposed to the idea of Phantom Las Vegas. If people haven't accused Lloyd Webber of selling out before (which they have), they certainly have proof of it now.

Ted is a fantastic performer. But to have him in the chorus is quite amazing really. Any idea what actual role he'll be playing?

What?! Keegan was a great Phantom! A lot better than the current Broadway principle - Mr McGillin.

The name change is hardly surprising, "Opera" and "Vegas" don't make like likely bedfellows, do they?

For what it's worth, I saw the show in London when it still had Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in the cast. tongue

To me, Colm Wilkenson will ALWAYS be *the* phantom.. I've seen several other gentlemen play the role, and never quite so good..

However, some people whom I associate with who are familiar with the play, also say that Colm was too 'fatherly'..
