Stephen Colbert Was Better On The Daily Show

Sat Apr 01, 2006 11:54 am

Is it me, or is Stephen Colbert just not as funny on his own show as he was on the Daily Show? I mean, the acts are fine (i.e. The Word) but he just stinks at interviews. It's one thing to be funny during an interview, but he just doesn't let anybody speak and half the time, he just acts kind of lame.

Way better on the Daily Show.

Something to remember though is that Colbert is playing a specific character with a specific personality on TCR...its somewhat different from his role on TDS so comparing the two is somewhat difficult, IMO...I think TCR is pretty good, not as good as TDS, but I'll still watch it....

He's playing the character of Bill O' Reily. He's suposed to be loudmouthed and obnoxious. But I did miss some of his interviews on the daily show.

this is the absolute best interview he gave...........

I agree that he was better on the Daily Show, even though the two characters are totally different. I do like The Word bit, always funny.

What ever happened to Ed Helms? He was one of my favorites. Or Samantha Bee?

With interviews, he has to think on his feet, whereas most of the stuff I saw him do on TDS was seemingly pre-scripted (with his addressing the camera, etc.). It's very hard to do interviews that are pre-scripted unless you've made advance arrangements with the interviewee.  Smile

Considering that he has to be much more spontaneous, TCR is okay, I think.

His interviews suck, but it's nothing compared to David Spade on the Showbiz Show. I'd rather be forced to have sex with Bea Arthur while watching a Golden Girls marathon than watch that moron attempt to make a funny for once in his life  Yeah sure

Also, neatness counts. David Spade should get a new hair person. He always looks like he just rolled out of bed and into the studio. I realize that this is his look, but to me, it just looks sloppy.

I'll be the first to break the tide here, but I think TCR is actually better than TDS. I always enjoy the interviews, although the format is starting to get a little old. The only thing that really sucks is that I used to go to sleep right after TDS and now I have to wait for TCR.  Wink

I actually love TCR, the interviews are generally the weakest part but they usually get some good laughs from me in any case. I particularly enjoy the "better know a district" series, there was one where stephen interviewed a gay senator from Mass., I believe, that was pretty damn funny. Watch out for those bears!

I think Colcert is better in small doses as on TDS. A whole show with him yaping can be a little much.

NO WAY.

The Colbert Report is a great show, and I am pretty much entertained throughout the entire show. His portrayal of the classic conservative pundit is right on. I definitely miss him on The Daily Show, but he does extremely well on his own and at times that show is even funnier than TDS.

and him yapping for the entire show is the whole point of the satire...

Colbert was fabulous at "This Week in God". I really miss that. I was glad that he got his own show but still mourn the loss of TWIG. Corddry did TWIG a couple times but it wasn't the same.

The Colbert Report is all about Colbert, and nothing else, just Colbert. That's the joke. It does get to be a repetitious joke after a while.

By the way, Samantha Bee was on maternity leave. She rejoined The Daily Show a couple days ago.

On a side note, I just got back from "An Evening with Rob Corddry," a free show at the University of Idaho just down the road. He was absolutely hilarious, and gave some insight on how they do interviews at TDS. It was awesome!

Here's a picture of us with him. I'm directly to his left.

Where was Colbert better??
Well that may be a debate, but I love the fact that we can get to watch another half hour of their program so I wouldn't change anything.
Related to the current issues, probably his best interview was in the second episode of The Colbert Report with Lou Dobbs.

They're still there. Samantha Bee was on maternity leave (I think) for a while, but I'm pretty sure she's back - she had a bit on the Israeli elections. And I never noticed that Ed Helms had gone.

I didn't realize it was a parody of O'Reilly. If you look at it like that, then it makes sense. I just thought he was bad at interviewing on his own show (which was strange, cos he was great on TDS at interviewing)

Ditto. Next time it's on, I'll have to watch it in that light. However, I'm sure the repetitive nature of the joke will still get old over time...

No. He was better before he was on the Daily Show... when no one heard from him or about him.

I like both TCR and TDS, but the field reporters on TDS are the best!

You really do have to watch it in that context. The show would drive me up the wall if I didn't know it was a parody. But I find it to be pretty damn funny - sure, it can have it's off days, but on the whole it's great.

Did anyone catch Ed Helms doing "This Week in God" last night on TDS?
I thought it was going to suck, but he actually did a pretty good job.

I agree, he did quite well. However, I still think Rob Corddry is the man to do TWIG, and I believe he is now the top dog on the Daily Show after Colbert has left. I thought that one episode Corddry anchored was hilarious.

Yeah, there was one at the UW as well. Absolutely hilarious! Corddry is the man (nice picture, by the way).

Colbert was very good on the Daily Show, and I enjoy the Colbert Report (although the Daily Show is much better). The problem with TCR is that Stephen is pretty much obsessed with himself, and other than Russ Lieber (David Cross) and Bobby the stage manager, it's all about him. It get repetitive.
Finally, everyone knows how he keeps the Peabody award and the Emmy award on his hearth. Aren't those for the Daily Show as a whole, and not just for him? Could someone please clarify this for me.
Thanks.

Before the Daily Show he was a closeted gay teacher on "Strangers With Candy". Before THAT perhaps?

I think it would be a better parody of O'Reilly if Colbert screamed maniacally at his guests once in a while. O'Reilly has been known to do that.  Smile

It's hit or miss. I like it sometimes, but I don't always and I agree he was better on TDS. Or maybe his shtick is just getting old. I guess what I really want is a regular news show that is critical of the rest of the media but is not FOX NEWS. The conservative nuts get a whole channel to themselves 24/7.
