Another Suicide At My University

Mankato Department of Public Safety staff, responding to a 911 call from a suicidal male, found the student lying on the ground below the visiting team scouting box on the east side of Blakeslee Field stadium. First responders provided medical treatment and the victim was transported to Immanuel St. Joseph Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

I don't know why, but within the last month, there have been two suicides at my university, both young men. I mentioned the other one in this thread Why Do People Make A Big Deal Of Suicide? (by Dc10s4ever Mar 22 2006 in Non Aviation)

What is the campus like?

There were a lot of suicides at NYU here in New York a few years back -- so much so that they had to erect 8-foot-tall plexiglass barriers around the open atrium of the library, where most of the jumps took place.

In the case of NYU, I think that being alone in a large city is overwhelming for some people -- also the illusion that you're not alone when actually it can be really hard to find someone to talk to amid a large population.

I think suicide is common among people 16-25 -- much more of an issue than people realize.

Not just the campus, but what is the family life like? A lot of times, there's so much pressure to perform from influences outside of the campus that when "events" like this happen, it goes unnoticed and the university itself just carries the bad reputation.

I would think weather might play a part in it as well. Mankato is not exactly what I would call a wonderful place to be in the wintertime. IIRC Seattle has a high rate of suicide as well that has been somewhat attributed to the gray, dreary weather during the winter months.

Weather. No one to talk to. Pressures. A loss. Each of this alone or combined, have the potential to produce Major or Clinical Depression. Many of these cases go untreated either because the person does not seek help due to the stigma associated with this illness or they do not really understand what they are going through. It is imperative to understand, then that between 15% to 20% of Major Depression cases commit suicide and are successful at it. Thus, it is a fatal illness.

When you know someone who appears depressed for more than 2 weeks, you must intervene and talk to them about Major Depression and where to seek help. Most Universities have special counseling for this issue, deal with it regularly and can really help a student.

I lost a classmate at Darden in 1998 to suicide. We had been students for 1 year and a half, and it was a traumatic event for me. I can't imagine how it was for their family.

A mostly white middle class campus. About 15,000 total students, but that also includes part timers, online, and PSEO.

Well, being that he is from Eden Prairie, he should be used to the weather. No big changes there.

When I was in first year we had one attempted on my floor (guy took a bottle of over the counter sleeping pills), and another building had someone take a swan dive off of it, I suppose it's not all that uncommon really. People get stressed out and instead of getting hammered or high they do something really desperate.
It may be too early to drink scotch... But it is NEVER too early to think about it...
