Austrhaalian Vs. US Beef

Thu Apr 06, 2006 10:51 pm

Can you actually taste the difference between US and Australian beef?

Hmm.. As far as I know from what I've tasted before (US Beef outside Australia - coz there are none here as Bill142 said).. There's a difference in the structure of the meat, the US being a little bit finer and softer.. personal preference though I would say!

Far too often American beef cattle have been lot fed, sometimes with a lot of additives to that feed which to me affects the taste, not always to the best vs non-USA beef.

Interesting that the American part of the thread title doesn't get the same treatment as the Australian part.

How unusual.

Never eat American or Australian beef. But you should put Canadian and South American beef into the equations too. I've heard the South American stuff is the best.

Never had Oz beef, however I do enjoy American and indeed Canadian beef.

British beef is ok, but nothing special.

I have had all types of beef, and to be honest they all seem pretty much the same, Canadian, and American are basically identical, South American is also really good.

Aussie beef is grass-fed. American beef is grain-fed (corn mainly)

Aussie beef is leaner. American beef is fattier.

There is a difference in taste, and many people prefer the fattier taste of American beef - even though it is less healthy, and potentially dangerous to ones health what with all the GM going on in the US agricultural industry.

South American beef (in particular Argentinian) may be as good as any other, however, standards in the industry in Argentina are not as high as they are in Aussie and NZ.

Hmmm... Care to substantiate your claim?

I have had both Australian and North American (there is no distinction made at my market) beef. I like Australian beef in chili and meat loaf for it's gamier leaner taste. For steaks it's hands down North American beef every time.

I also had beef from Argentina once. Again with steaks (filet mignon) I found that it was more like the Aussie beef than NA beef.

Obviously everyone has their own preference.

American lamb is far less gamey than Australian, and lighter in color too. It used to be that Australian lamb was hard to find, now the reverse is true. American lamb is hardly sold in major supermarkets, nad when it is, it is very, very expensive. I asked my local supermarket, which carries Australian, and the manager said that Americans won't pay the cost of American lamb.

Sorry for going a bit off topic.
