BAGHDAD, Iraq - A U.S. Marine was shot and killed allegedly by an Iraqi soldier at a base near the Syrian border, the U.S. said Friday. The Iraqi soldier was then wounded by another American Marine.

The shootings occurred Thursday near Qaim, 200 miles west of Baghdad, the U.S. statement said.

"An Iraqi army soldier allegedly shot and killed the U.S. Marine on a coalition base" near Qaim, the statement said. "The Iraqi soldier was shot by another U.S. Marine."

WTF!!? One can only speculate what caused this, but its not a good thing for building trust during joint operations.

At least 2,349 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the
Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.

Jesus, I didn't realise it was that much. Isn't that getting up to the total killed in the Twin Towers?

Last death toll I have heard was 2752. So it is getting closer to that number unfortunatly.

"Friendly Fire" unfortunately.

Lets see what the explanation is . . .

Unfortunate circumstance.

I dont think it is your typical friendly fire deal, but more like a murder instead. The fact the Iraqi was shot by another marine points that out to me. If it was an accident you probably wouldnt have that. Of course details are sketchy and we will probably never hear the whole story.

"Friendly fire, ...isn't."

I'm surprised there aren't more blue-on-blue incidents between Iraqi and US forces. The complex urban battlefield and the inexperience of Iraqi forces are a recipe for this sort of thing.

You may be right, but suppressive fire in a situation like that is instant and instinctual. There's no waiting around to see what's going on. Shoot, ask questions later.

Quite true . . . Murphy's Laws of Warfare. . . .

I am surprised as well, there hasn't been more incidents of Blue on Blue . . .

I do think Bushpilot has a point here - if the Iraqi soldier was taken under fire by another Marine - perhaps there's more to this than a Blue on Blue incident.

quite obviously a tragic misunderstanding from both sides. And maybe the result of mistakes done on a higher level.
