Did You Bet On The Grand National?

Sun Apr 09, 2006 2:34 am

It turned into a bit of a kerfuffle! Did anyone back the winner?

Well I was at MAN today so I only caught bits on the radio but I thought I heard there was a false start. Plus some newspaper reporter gained access to a horse so he could show that the security was crap.

There was, but no big drama. The "break-in" was a typical tabloid splash meaning very little, given that the horses were being guarded at the time.

You don't have steeplechasing in Australia, do you? Isn't it all flat-racing?

Is that where the horses have to jump over things? - If so that's not really popular here, no

All our horse stuff is done in spring, Around September, I think? (Melbourne Cup, Oaks Day, Caulfield Cup etc) and It's all just running around in a circle.

I've been betting (via an adult - for now) on hedgehunter for the past 3 years. In 2004, he was winning but fell at the last fence. Last year he won and i got £32 (hey big spender!  Wink) and this year he came 2nd.  Sad

I like to watch horse racing - probably inspired by a $240 win at Del Mar in California a couple of years ago

BIG things, in the case of the Grand National.

I should think the ground might tend to be a bit hard in most of Australia - dangerous.

Why the sad smiley? Surely you had an each way bet on him?

Dam right I did and I am now going to sue somebody over my loss! Yes that's right, I put a whopping 50p each way on Cornish Rebel in honour of Cornish himself! So the bloody fool lost me £1!

Well that was just Hedgehunter. I put an each way on Justin Debt and Amberleigh House, but neither finished  ashamed . I put the bet on hedgehunter to win because he was joint favourite and he won last year so i thought what the hell

Weren't those terrible odds? 5-1 in a Grand National must be damn near unprecedented. Maybe Red Rum when he was going for his third win might have come close. I liked one of the trainer's comments, when he said that 5-1 was a good bet for any particular horse to get round let alone win.

Myself too put a bet, £200 on "Ole Faithful Skidmarks" but as you can see, he's a little lost and isn't expected to finish for another 40 days or so.

Also note the custom modification of the wheelchair.. go Andy!

Yesterday we had the Golden Slipper (the worlds richest 2-year-old race). BTW the Melbourne Cup and Oaks are in early November and Caufield is late October.
