Car Thoughts: Z4 2.5i, Golf GTI, Mx-5, Or 130i?

Thu Apr 13, 2006 12:05 am

These are the cars that I am now hesitating between, from priciest:

BMW 130i 265bhp
BMW Z4 2.5i 177bhp
The most serious and reasonable candidate, the manual gear Golf GTI 200bhp
Mazda Mx-5 170bhp

The Z4 is very comfortable and practical for a single person, which is what I am. It's only problem is that it's not a real icon for its price (compared to, say, a pricier boxster), and that it only looks good in one color (blacK) with a very carefully chosen interior colours. Otherwise yes the car is plain ugly don't worry I know that. The 130i is too expensive for a little auto. It's other problem is that it's beaten hands down each time by the Golf R32. But it's sure more lovable than a rugged Golf GTI. The MX-5 is too noisy and toy like.

The Golf R32 isn't in the cards because I think it looks "pimped" and I don't like 4 wheel drive cars. I didn't ask check for SLK's or Nissan Z's yet because I never suspected I would not find what I am looking for in the above brands..

Your thoughts?

Is that an Audi version of the R32? I thought that one came out already? I'm sure it's even more expensive than the 130i  Sad

No - it wont be using the 3.2 from the R32 (or the 3.2 A3 for that matter). Instead it will be using a very highly tuned 2.0 Turbo instead - with four wheel drive of course.

The 3.2 version of the A3 has been around since launch I believe, but although pretty sporty, the S3 is expected to be a lot more hard core.

It definately needs to be something special, the new A3 handles like a boat  Wink

It does not  grumpy

Especially not in Sport spec - and especially not my one which handles better than all other A3s due to the considerable skill of the driver  Wink

The ride however DOES need sorting.......

Too hard by far - typical Audi problem. Exascerbated in my car by the firmer settings and tyres of the sport model.

Having said that, it is a regular criticism by UK journalists that Audis that feel fine on continental roads feel very firm on UK roads. Audi doesn't (lthoguh thats about to change) set the cars up specifically for UK road conditions, unlike BMW or Mercedes who have dedicated settings for this country.

The Z-series BMWs are excellent cars. You get the BMW quality in a fun to drive convertible. I would go for that.

Yeah, have to agree here, our A2 is a sport and has the sports suspension and 17" rims and the ride is pretty bad as a result.

My previous car is a Z3, but not in this country. The only thing I am slightly worried about is the attention it will attract at my work. I'm not so sure about show off anymore, at this day age (I'm 31).

I'd like to drive it though, because it's the only car in the hole bunch that makes my heart beat faster when I think of it.

Are you speaking from experience by the way?

Who cares about showing off. You should enjoy your car, and the Z4 seems to make you feel that way. As great a car as the Z3 was, it was still using 1980s suspension componants. The Z4 is that much more advanced and that much more fun.

Yes. I have driven the Land Shark before and found it to be up to the standards of any BMW

The MX-5 is no competitor. A car for women, and then it isn't German Big grin. Also I hate the Mazda Zoom Zoom Zoom commercials.

The only Mazda I would ever buy would be the RX-8, because of the unique Wankel engine...

I cannot give you any serious advice, because my financial state isn't yet in a position where I could afford any of the mentioned cars. I would take the 130i, nothing beats this engine.

Consider getting a Subaru Impreza WRX. I smoke MX-5s, GTIs, R32s, Boxsters all day long in mine. It handles good and is quick. You did mention you dont like AWD but you should consider it. Also look into an M roadster that thing is sexy. Maybe even a Honda S2000 or Nissan 350Z. O yeah and RX-8s suck. Bad mpg, slow and ugly(at least from the back  Smile)
