Google Unleaches Calendar: A Must Have!

Fri Apr 14, 2006 6:15 am

Google has unleashed its Calendar system today, which is available for anyone who has a Google account (not necessarily a Gmail account). Having used other systems that did the same thing, I tell you, Google's is by far the best. The last one I used was what is bundled within the Horde email/messaging/etc system that my web host has. Nice, but with issues. And a bit heavy. I had silently been praying for Google to come and save me, and after seeing a few screenshots for what was known as "cl2", it's now out. Features:
- allows you to import your existing calendar in iCal or CSV (Outlook) format
- allows you to use ready-made calendars, for example [your country]'s public holidays
- allows you to share your calendar (make it public). If concerned, create a private and a public calendar within the same account (you can see that my calendar and the Canadian Holidays calendar are separate)
- allows you to invite people to an event, and it will send out notices for them to mark it in their calendar automatically
- different views available: day/month/week/next 4 days
- can set up daily digest, which is emailed to you at 5AM every day, giving you an outlook for what's on today
- reminders in the form of email/popup, and for you lucky folks in the US, SMS
- recurring events etc (good for birthdays)
- of course, ability to search

So there ya have it. Give it a shot. It's great for keeping track of everything!

Also, if you do not have a Gmail account, and want one, email me at ETStar@gmail.com and I will reply with an invitation.

Thanks for letting me know! This really is a great program. It took a bit of sleuthing to find it, as it hasn't been indexed by Google yet.

So for those who want it, it's at: http://www.google.com/calendar

ETStar - Do you know when they're going to have a module for the calendar that you can add as content to your Google homepage?
Militant Agnostic - I don't know and you don't either.

No thanks, will stay with Yahoo. Google should finish other projects before starting up yet another project that will be in Beta mode for, who knows how long? Also, the calendar program only works with IE and Firefox. What about those people using Opera, Netscape, Safari, Slim Browser, etc...? I guess they're SOL. Further, the beta calendar doesn't allow sync'ing to cell phones, PDAs, etc...
I'm not saying this might not be the calendar program of choice in the (very distant) future, just saying it is way too early to even consider making the switch from Yahoo.

I don't understand why they keep wasting man hours on these projects that don't contribute to their bottom line.

Google only exists so that insiders can sell thier stock before the Google bubble bursts (and steal advertiser's money at the same time).

Anyone else wondering why Google hasn't developed their own browser yet?

In a few weeks, you will see ads appear in calendar based on the events that you have in there.

Google's strategy is very simple. They make money by serving up ads. How do you get people to look at your ads? Develop applications that people will use and have ads integrated in them.

I use Yahoo! exclusively; Google is a privacy nightmare. The extensive us e of ads is also getting very frustrating.

People keep speculating about this, but it will never happen. Google would be smart to let Microsoft and Apple do all the plumbing and they sit on top of the OS, develop applications that people will use, and show more and more ads.

Writing an OS isn't easy. Google cannot show ads in the OS, only in programs that run on the OS. So, why design the OS itself?

It's a good idea, but I already have 5 calenders for 2006 and I reaaly, really don't like the idea of a hacker possibly getting into private details. I think I'll just stay with my GREEN DAY calender and my FAVOURITE SHOTS FROM A.NET Wink calender which are both on my wall.  Smile

So now I reply...

Is it not better that it is in Beta mode with enough testers out there from which it can get valuable input? A smart way to get through the testing process don't you think? Even when in Beta version, 99% of the time, it still works, don't it? I know my Gmail has never failed me. As for IE and Firefox, well that's how life is, as they still look after the majority. Google is not here to do charity service, and those who choose not to use other browsers do make their own decisions, no? No sync'in to cell phones PDAs etc yet, yes, but am sure that is still to come.

Oh, and did I mention that it was a FREE application? ie you are not paying for it?

Do you really think they are wasting man hours and that the Calendar will not contribute to their bottom line?

Quoting Itsjustme (Reply 5):

Why should they, when Firefox is there?

Quoting Tifoso (Reply 10):

To be honest with you, being a google-only user, I have learned to ignore ads, and they are not intrusive at all. What's intrusive are those Yahoo! image ads that bounce or are in the middle of articles etc. And when it comes to privacy, can you vouch for Yahoo! that there are absolutely no privacy issues there?

Hahhaah good one! I tried the wall thing too, never worked. I tried the notebook thing too, a little annoying finding a pen or pencil. Given that I am on my computer ummm at least 60% of the day, and the fact that I can get to Google's calendar pretty quickly, it works best for me.

Hummm I see that I could possibly access my Goog calendar through Thunderbird and even Rainlendar... yummiee
