Deal Or No Deal: Anyone Watch It?

Sat Apr 15, 2006 12:14 pm

For those in the US, there is a show called Deal or No Deal that is a new "fad" I guess. Anyone else watch it?

I'm sort of middle of the road. It's a dumb game from a contestant stand point. All you do is pick cases with hidden ammounts of money in them. It's a game of luck, and at least they are honest on the game itself and say it's all luck.

Howie Mandel makes it or breaks it. He at least adds something fun to the show.

Saw the SAME EPISODE multiple times on NBC in-flight on United from ORD-HNL. Semi-entertaining considering the circumstances...but I wouldn't watch it unless i'm bored as hell. Some of the family members are can also be incredibly irrational.

Some of them are flat out over the top.

"Howie, wear this ___________! It's good luck to our family!"

And everyone gets pretty worked up over something beyond they're control.

I watch it whenever it's on. As a part-time statistician, I like to see if people really understand their odds, or if they just go on gut feel. Most of the time, they make good decisions.

What really bugs me is when they talk about what they think is in their case. Look, you don't want to see what's in your case unless:

there are 2-3 amounts left on the board, and they are 300K, 500K, and 750, or 1,000K. Then, I might take a risk. or,

you busted, and you're just looking for dignity.

Truth is, you use your case to leverage offers from the bank. God, I just wish someone would come out and say this, I'd feel a whole lot better about things...

I watched it once when it first came on, I figured that it would probably go the way of Who Want's to be a Millionaire. That show was great for a while and then they overdid it and now its on weekdays at like 11:00am.

It must bug you when they get down to a few cases and say "John, you have a whopping 66% chance of having at least 100k" or whatever, when in reality they still had no better than a 1 in 26 chance, it just so happened that they eliminated the cases in the right order for that to be the case

I watch it everytime it is on. I always laugh when someone is offered a bunch of cash, and then they get greedy and go for it, and end up with fifty bucks. Maybe I'm just cold, but I think its funny to watch them get greedy and lose their cash. Solid show though. Like I said, I watch it everytime it is on.

This show's been on TV here for a few years now - I believe the UK & US versions are based on the original OZ version - You can apply to be a contestant on the OZ version, but as stated on the website, you must be in Melbourne (the show is taped here)

We get it on Prime TV here (Oz station) I watched it once and at the end was left feeling...."Why?"...so I don't watch it anymore, I prefer torturing small mammals and scaring children.

I'm absolutely addicted - glued to my TV between 4:15pm and 5pm every day. Noel Edmonds is an absolute legend. Anyone see the episode yesterday where the guy went home with 1p?

its an absolute load of bollocks, in my opinion. what a waste of time and space, i know the US version is slightly more 'glitzy' than here in the UK, but what a lame 'gameshow'.

It was alright at first, but it gets a bit boring after a while.

I nearly saw someone get the top prize (which is 250k GBP over here) she had that and the 3rd highest prize left (75k) and she no dealed a 125k offer, but in her box was the 75k. ....which was annoying because i would have seen it all then and wouldn't have to have watched it any more.

It's the best TV gameshow i've seen in years, very addictive. There are no obscure questions about Greek mythology or anything like that you get on WWTAM. It's a genuine game about luck and timing, no two shows are the same, that's what makes it interesting and different from other gameshows. Add a top drawer presenter like Noel Edmonds and you have some great entertainment. Yesterdays contestant went away with 1p, what a shame!

Me too! I think it is a fantastic show. I always like working out the mean so I can guess how much the banker will offer!

I think Noel Edmonds is a great presenter for the show even though he is an arrogant twat.

How is Noel Edmunds arrogant? Arrogance is a word thrown around all too often these days, heck even i've been accused of it recently. There's a difference been charisma and confidence, and arrogance.

I agree that arrogance is a word thrown around too much these days, however, I do feel it fitting for Noel Edmonds. Don't get me wrong, I think he is a great host for the show, I just feel he is arrogant

Arrogance is what happens when confidence gets pushed to far and I feel this is where Noel Edmonds goes wrong.

He is seems very false on the show- almost as if he couldn't give a toss what happens to the contestants because he gets paid a huge sum anway- compare this to Chris Tarrent who seems to be far more in touch with the contestants.

I could be wrong about Noel, it is just the feeling I get when I watch the show.

Personally i thing Tarrant is an absolute tosser. Sly, patronising and seedy, but there you go.

Maybe Edmunds appears arrogant because the fact is he probably doesn't care what happend to the contestants. He's done so many shows now, he's probably become desensitised.

Or maybe i really am arrogant and am just trying to defend my kind.  boggled

I've watched it, like, a couple or three times. It's okay. It's fun to see the reaction on the losers when they lose.

The main problem I have with the US version is that it moves way too slowly...they need to speed it up a bit, particularly in the first two rounds where almost no one will take the deal regardless of what happens...
