Rhaaaaa - I Lost My Friggin Passport

Sat Apr 15, 2006 11:21 pm

It seems that I lost my super neato biometric passport after I immigrated into the beautiful country of Germany yesterday morning. I am searching since an hour and I already called DUS airport, Deutsche Bahn and a taxi company, unfortunately did nobody find it. The thing was just three months old and I paid 59 EUR for it.

I am unimpressed, unamused and totally annoyed since I have to pay 59 EUR for a new one and since I have to apply for it at some stupid bureaucrats who need an hour to complete the application form.

Keep checking around your bags, clothes, go back to place you went where you might have lost it and their lost and found departments. Good luck.

Yeah agree, try and think when you last had it, when you last looked at it - maybe you'll remember, as the Irish say "It's somewhere next to somethin" Hope you find it!!

I already searched everything. I will wait a few days and ask at Deutsche Bahn, the taxi company and DUS airport again, maybe someone will find it within the next few days.

You are right, I would have an even bigger problem when I had lost it in the USA.

Yeah, my advice is keep searching through all your clothes, and retrace your steps. Best advise possible. Don't freak out just yet. Something you just misplace and then find later. I hope that's the case now! Good Luck!

Think yourself lucky, UK passport holders have to pay £52 plus £6 for the post office to check you documents, and there's no guarantee that your passport form will be accepted. I have my passport in my hand as I type, currently sitting in NCL for my one-way flight to ALC at 1915GMT. I didn't think NCL could get anymore boring than it already is, only 1 aircraft on the ground, and that takes off in 45 minutes.

Always keep a scanned copy of your passport in your hotmail or gmail account. That way, if you ever lose your passport whilst abroad, you can always print off a copy from an internet cafe.

Wow, Patrick, sorry--that's one of my worst nightmares. Ironically, it seems to be the worst for US citizens if we're at home when it happens... it's about $70 US to get a passport, and it takes a while unless you pay a lot more for emergency service. When you lose one abroad (I haven't, but one of our students did when we were in Italy last year), the embassies seem to process things a lot more easily.

That sucks Sabena332.

If I remember correctly, the new Swiss passport costs approx. 250 Swiss Francs (that is the new one with all kind of biometric data for US immigration). That is around 160 Euros  irked

After reading this thread one thing came to my mind. I know it's off-topic but oh well...

I am travelling, in two weeks time, to the lucky country of Australia with my (old) machine-readable, red-cover German passport which expires in 5 years or so. Are those (old) machine-readable, red-cover German passports still accepted, or should I get the super neato biometric passport instead?

Danke in advance.

Hey, don't feel bad dude...

Not too long ago, I was due to leave for Mexico in less than 2 weeks. In my preparation, I was starting to pack the things I would need to go. This included getting together my pieces of identification (ie. MY PASSPORT). So in the process of doing my laundry, I had put my passport in my pocket to remind myself NOT TO FORGET TO PACK IT. But in my ultra-preparedness, I decided to wash the pants I was wearing at the time of doing my laundry. I had checked the pockets of all my other pants I was washing, but of course, due to good ol' Murphy's Law, I didn't check the pants I was wearing, and therefore, my passport was still comfortably tucked away into the pocket, going for a pre-trip swim in my washing machine. About 5 minutes later, while doing some other packing while waiting for my clothes to wash, I remembered to pack my passport...THAT WAS IN THE WASHING MACHINE...

Long story short, I had to spend the next day missing school to fill out application forms, going to the passport office, standing in line, getting new pictures, and shelling out $90.00 (Canadian) for an express passport due to arrive 2 days before I left. It all worked out Big grin

Good Luck!
Shut up and calculate.

I've been considering getting the new biometric super expensive passport, but I don't know if the German Embassy can help me with that. Would I get trouble for flying with my old (regular) passport, which expires in 2009? I won't be flying into the US anyway, but I mean can only the biometric one be used now anywhere?

I hope you can find your passport, Patrick.

Sabena332,

I follow you! I'm an expert in that business. lost it once in DUB. Searched everywhere, drove back to the hotel. It was hours before I needed to fly. Headed to the airport in good time, called the airline and the police, and thoroughly searched the car. Well, as we enter the terminal, a nice Europcar guy comes running with a passport he found hidden somewhere in the seat  Smile

Then, in Portugal I couldn't find it. I always check if I have my passport, wallet and phone when I leave somewhere. But suddenly my passport was gone. Could't find it this time, but the Danish embassy in Lisbon (who was conviently located almost next to my hotel) wrote a note in Portuguese that I could identify me with my drivers license. I called the airline, and they said no problem. Indeed I got through airport security without problems  Smile

A non-biometric passport is btw 80EUR here, so don't complain. It will probably rise in august when the biometric one is introduced..
