There’s currently no legal protection against age discrimination. It is still lawful to discriminate on grounds of age. However, new regulations outlawing age discrimination at work will be introduced in October 2006.
From October 2006 it will be unlawful for an employer to impose a lower age limit when recruiting, unless this age restriction can be objectively justified.
At the moment you generally have no unfair dismissal rights after you have reached your employer’s normal retirement age for your job. This means that there’s no risk of an Employment Tribunal claim for an employer if they choose to dismiss you. Also, your employer doesn’t have to pay you the statutory minimum redundancy payment if you are under 18 or over 65 (or after your normal retirement age if this is lower). This means that unless a redundancy payment is included in your employment contract, you won’t receive any redundancy pay.
I Say its a terrible law and all the old bastards should be shot !!!
