How Do Dragons Spit Fire?

Tue Apr 18, 2006 5:30 am

I've been wondering about this since I was a child:

How do dragons spit fire? Do they run on gasoline, and if they do, where and how do they fill up? Do they eat regular food too, or is their entire system on gasoline? How do they ignite the flame in the first place? Is there a little pilot flame that's on all the time? Even at night? What if it goes out? How do they re-light it? Do they have to wait for a lightning?

Many questions.

It's like a reverse fart - instead of the methane coming out of their backsides, it comes out of their mouths. They then have some igniting device to light the methane.... Big grin

Ever had that burning feeling in your stomach after eating jalapeño pepper (or worse yet, habanero!)? Methinks a dragon's diet consists mainly of said peppers, thus making it able to spit fire.  Silly
Don't expect to see me around that much (if at all) -- the contact link should still work, though.

I can't believe you're asking this in all seriousness. Have you seen a fire-breathing dragon recently? No, I'm sure you haven't. Cos the cost of gasoline has gone up so much they can't afford to fill up.

I believe that there is a conversion kit for changing them over to bio-diesel, available in every country except the US.  duck

You should ask Mr. Terry Pratchett, or better yet, read "Guards! Guards!" You will learn dragons, at least those of the Draco Vulgaris (swamp dragon) kind can readjust their internal plumbing in ways that allow them to convert almost every (in-)edible thing into fire. What may seem like an advantage to you usually ends up being a disadvantage to the dragon since they've never really mastered the art of chemistry, AS A CERTAIN INDIVIDUAL WHO ALWAYS SPEAKS IN CAPITALS WOULD AGREE.  Wink

One of the neat ideas of re-engineering mythology was that they're producing different chemicals in separate glands which will spontaneously ignite when mixed.

There is actually a biological precedent for this approach in existence, the Bombardier beetle.

Not that I would involve myself in a dispute with the one who's speaking in ALL-CAPS, of course...!

Think there is an "explanation" in the film "Reign of Fire" - similar to what Klaus suggests IIRC. You'll have to watch it if you want to find out but be warned it's not a particularly good movie.
