San Francisco Earthquake & Fire - 100 Years

Wed Apr 19, 2006 12:19 am

Well it was one hundred years ago today that Ansel Adams' mother dropped him on the sidewalk and broke his nose. The great San Francisco earthquake and fire, April 18, 1906.

"From the Ferries to Van Ness you’re a Godforsaken mess;
But the damndest finest ruins—nothin’ more or nothin’ less."

Wasn't it Mrs. O'Leary's cow who got that one started? If I'm not mistaken, the cow was frollicking about, setting off movement of the tectonic plates. As the city began to rumble, the cow became nervous and kicked over YET ANOTHER lantern!  bouncy

Not really. I didn't find it all that earth-shaking.

We're going to get another big one soon.

My apologies to the good people of San Fran Califrisco. I copy/pasted an incorrect version of that old poem. It really goes:

"From the ferries to Van Ness you're a Godforsaken mess
but the damndest finest ruins nothing less"

Someone had added words that did not improve it.

Also, it is ferries and not fairies. That is important.

This is a very interesting site. When the next one hits, it's going to be nasty.

We're totally unprepared. The San Andreas Fault runs right down the Peninsula, where I live. The City and Peninsula will be the most devastated regions of the Bay Area, but the sad reality is that local governments throughout the Bay Area really haven't done what they need to do to get us prepared. The political bullshit between W. Brown and J. Brown--both of whom are total jackasses--and delays on the new east span of the Bay Bridge, as well as Schwarzenegger's big "you didn't vote for me, so f*** you" to Bay Area residents on funding the construction of the span, are just two examples of how politics has come before preparedness. Local politics here makes me absolutely sick.

Last night, the History Channel was pretty darn negative to almost
completely write off San Francisco when the next quake hits.
Although,I agree, that beautiful Bay Area needs to better prepare,I never saw a TV program to frown so hard on a people's city.

Also in the program:
1)In a act of racism,after the 1906 quake,and beginning the rebuilding
process, the politician's tried to prevent the Chinese community from
returning to SF. But the Chinese,in effect, said to hell
with the city,and rebuilt anyway.Bravo!

2),The SF city politicians, suppress the number of
casualty of the 1906 quake.Even today,no one has a
accurate number.
Tuesday's Off! Do not disturb.
