Wow: SOARIN' At Epcot Orlando! Great Experience!

Thu Apr 20, 2006 12:19 am

Hi All!

On a recent two week trip to Florida, my girlfriend and me decided to spend one day at EPCOT. We really enjoyed the park, both the World Showcase and the Future World. But one ride was awesome: SOARIN'.

This ride opened in 2005 and is the newest attraction (along with Turtle Talk With Crush, which was a lot of fun too, even though I'm far far north of 5 years old)

I wasn't even sure where to post this, since this is really aviation related. Basically, SOARIN' is a giant screen movie theater, where you sit in what looks like a hang glider, dangling in the air with your feet hanging out below. Then you watch a movie of overflying 12 different landscapes of California, like Napa, San Francisco, Yosemite, LA. The seats will move with the movie, there is wind blowing in your direction, and yes, in the orange groves there's even an orange smell!

Only down side: Too short.
But otherwise, awesome!

Here's what the seats look like:

Here's what the flight looks like:

While the admission price to EPCOT (like all Disney Theme Parks) is rather steep, I would say SOARIN' has doubled the park's value, at least for me. Oh, and while you're at it, skip "Mission: Space" and get in line for SOARIN' a second time. By the way, one visitor died on that crazy spinning ride about a week ago. Myself, I felt like puking afterwards, even though I haven't had any lunch yet, and even though as a pilot I'm used to all kinds of motion sickness inducing situations. What an intense yet lame ride, with a stupid plot. Don't do it.

But SOARIN'.... wow! What an experience!

One final note... Do YOU have a theme park ride named after you? Well, I do! The spelling may be a little bit different, but it's pronounced 100% the same. It's funny to stand in line with all the other people around you saying your name all the time!

Greetings
Soren (= Soarin')  santahat

Didn't manage to get onto Soarin, but I did do all the parks. Well worth visiting them all if you get the chance! Queueing seriously takes the biscuit on some rides though, Test Track is one of them, along with Hulk at Universal!

It's a good ride. Basically it's a clone of the same attraction at California Adventure in Anaheim.

Yeah I agree Soarin' is absolutely amazing. I went on it in March with my mum. She really enjoyed it too and she's 60 God Bless her. Was well worth the 60 minutes plus queueing time.

I went on it for the first time last summer, it was a great ride. I like how you take your shoes off and return to them!

I thought Mission: Space was great. I agree, the plot was terrible, but the ride experience was pretty cool.

My friend is one of the managers on that side of the park. I got to watch the "flight" from the ground, and actually behind the screen! It's amazing, the ride makes you feel like you're moving from side to side, but in reality you just move up and down.

One of my faves in the parks!

Thanks for reviving the trauma (I had blocked that experience out of my memory).

I had to lie down after that ride. I'm not the stuff of astronauts, that's for damned sure! Too old, I guess.

Oh yeah, Soarin' is great!!!!!
I had the opportunity to ride it in October and... Oh my, EVERYTHING in that ride impressed me, from the line until the end of it.

BTW, Epcot is a great place, everything is simply awesome, with the exception of Mission Space, as you said. The idea of this ride is good, but the sensations we have during it are not the better ones differently from Soarin' or Test Track.

What about Illuminations?? OMFG, I wish I could live in that park to watch that spectacular show every night before going to bed, can you imagine that??

But back on Soarin, I recommend that you take a fast pass as soon as you get in the park. I got a 2 hours line when I was there. But it was worth to wait! Disney seems to be adding smells to their new attractions - have you gone to the Philharmagic 3D movie in the Magic Kingdom?? - It's simply awesome!

Well I love everything in that city, I'm very suspicious to talk about it! Big grin

Rgs!

Also a huge Soarin' fan (and Disney theme park fan in general). Even if the wait is long, the ride is well worth it (and request row 1 for the best view...row 2&3 have the feet from the riders above you...still a great ride though).

Expedition Everest (at Animal Kingdom) is also a great addition!

Soarin' is indeed a great ride...I've loved it since I first rode a few yrs ago in California. Great to have it in Florida now...also Mission:Space is pretty cool too, despite all the bad press.

Does anyone know if they tore down the old Horizons pavillion that was in the same space Soarin' is in now? Or did they reuse it like they did with the old "Wings of Man" by Eastern that is now the Buzz Lightyear ride.

Mission: Space is now in what is the old Horizons pavilion.

I was down at WDW this past weekend...unfortunately didn't get to do Soarin because each time I went, the wait was 90+ minutes and no good FastPasses were available. Nonetheless, I did do Expedition Everest and Lights, Motors, Action for the first time for both, and I was really impressed with both. I'll probably be back down in the Orlando area in October (during what's shaping up to be my worst travel month in memory, with trips to possibly Boston, Orlando, New York and London and maybe Los Angeles in successive weeks).

Now I'm all screwed up. I haven't been to the Mouse House that much since I moved away. So Soarin' is all new construction? I guess it would have to be since everything else is still around from the original setup.

I see it now. It's in with The Land. Interesting place to shoehorn it in.

I haven't visited EPCOT in more than ten years, so it's unlikely Soarin' was there when I last toured.

I am a huge fan of the World Showcase, especially the Mexico venue with the volcano and plaza restaurant.

I don't get Test Track. I have a friend with a convertible. Driving in the convertible we sometimes go out when it is hot out, somtimes when its cold, we drive over cobblestones..and more importantly, we've been on freeway ramps that involved good acceleration to 70 mph. Therefore, I didn't get the point of test track. I guess if you've never been in a convertible its cool.

BTW, I am an annual pass holder to Disneyworld.

It was 250 minutes on New Years Eve  . LOL. Not sure if I would wait that long for it....but again, I really do like it.

Soarin' was new last year (2005) as part of the Happiest Celebration on Earth. If you haven't been since 1995-1996 approx, there is quite a bit that is new at Epcot (no longer called "EPCOT"). Universe of Energy was updated to include Ellen and Bill Nye, Horizons was demolished to make way for Mission:Space, World of Motion was taken away to make room for Test Track, Journey into your Imagination was redone, The Living Seas is currently being slowly refurbished, and The Land was refurbished (with the addition of Soarin'). Plus, the new version of Illuminations (Reflections of Earth) started in 2000 and is truely spectacular. RECOMMEND you visit!

As many of you have seen, don't ever go to DL or WDW during peak times. You'll just find yourself in line and frustrated.

As someone who has worked at Walt Disney World for 2 semesters (8 months total), I can tell you that Spring Break, Thanksgiving, and Christmas->New Year's are the absolute WORST times to visit the parks.

You want my advice? Mid-September through early November (leave a week's grace before Thanksgiving) is the perfect time. School has started so attendance is low, but the weather is great. Not to mention off-season hotel/airfare discounts. Alternatively, mid-Feb through mid-March is ok, but once you hit the 2nd or 3rd week of March, there's a Spring Break rush.

So to summarize, wait until school starts; but go before Thanksgiving. Then those 210 minute lines for the big rides will be more like 10 minutes.

You get way more for your buck and there is exponentially less stress.

Growing up there I found February to be the best time to go. The weather is cool and if you can stand the Love Bugs swarming it is great and uncrowded.

I went to Orlando last October, there was still a crowd but the lines for most things were only an hour. Make sure you get those fast passes when you can.

Soarin was good, would do that again even if it was over a one hour wait.

Test Track; ok I guess not that great, would really like to do the real test track in Germany that was recently shown on Amazing Race 9.

Mission Space great ride, keep watching the screen or you are likely to get sick. I'm just lucky I didn't read all the reviews or I probably would not have done it.

Space Mountain another good thrill ride, or is that one at Magic Kingdom.

For those of you reading this topic that are unfamiliar with Mission Space, all it is is the ride "The Gravitron" that is always at local fairs and passing through carnivals, except I find the gravitron better because you are not in a tightly enclosed space.

Same here, Mexico is without a doubt the best one inside and out. I think the boat ride is actually one of the best rides in the park.

I personally like Canada (Le Cellier is an AMAZING restaurant), and Germany (the Bier Hall buffet is great food, and is very entertaining!) Though Mexico does have those 3-layer Fiesta Margaritas.  yummy

How many of you have "Drank Around the World"? I have! For those of you who don't know, it means going around the World Showcase and stopping in each country for a drink. I also recommend eating something small every 3rd or 4th country otherwise you won't make it! (One of the best EPCOT bargains are the egg rolls at the quick service location in China; check 'em out!)

Let me tell you, I was damn sloshed by the end. (Eleven drinks in about 2-3 hours!)  drunk
