Woman To Build House Out Of 747

Fri Apr 21, 2006 5:45 am

A California woman is going ahead with the construction of a house made of elements from a 747 Jumbo jet.

The wing of the Boeing jet will be used for the roof, its nose as a meditation temple while its trademark "bulge" will serve as a loft.

The plane's parts were obtained from an aeroplane scrap yard in California.

They cost around $100,000 (£56,000) to purchase, while the construction of the project, which is expected to start in June, is thought likely to cost several million dollars by the time it is completed.

Ms Rehwald's family owns one of California's largest Mercedes-Benz dealerships.

The property will be set on a 55-acre (22-ha) piece of land on the remote Malibu hills, looking out onto a nearby mountain range, a valley and the Pacific Ocean.

Why not just buy a intact 747 and live in the 747.

Even though I guess it would be more appropriate here in non-av...
Don't expect to see me around that much (if at all) -- the contact link should still work, though.

Wonder if she knows that aluminum burns real good?

Not too many years ago someone was selling 727 fuselages on pedestals in a lake in Tennessee. The fuselage was mounted on a spindle that would let it rotate with the prevailing wind. The ad touted that you would wake up every morning to a different view!
Warm winds blowing, heating blue skies, and a road that goes forever, I'm going to Texas!

I remember a few years ago I wanted to live in one of those ex VS 747s out in VCV. I'd have left it pretty much as it was and just made a few internal mods (like adding a few bits to the galley etc...) I'd have been the real 'birdman' lol  Smile

still I also wanted to fill my garden with airplane parts, even priced up a DC-10 engine cowl of all things!!!!

It should be noted I've matured a bit since then, hell I've had serious girlfriends since those days  Wink

1), Just what I was thinking and 2), That would be so much cooler, like, the first class section could be your bedroom.  Smile

First Class passengers are my favourites. They can't get any further forward without an ATPL.

Would you want a window cleaning bill that big?

To make it cheaper to move.

If I sky crane could move an intact 747 this would not be a problem. Considering it can't, the chances of moving it by road to anywhere 'usefull' intact is nil. the only way to move it somewhere usefull and 'inexpensively' is to cut it down to the point were it can be moved by road or sky crane.

I would love to do this myself, but as my lot is spacious enough for the kids to run around un restricted, it's still not big enough for anything with wings over 50' without violating code.
