What's Up With SS United States And SS Norway?

Sun Apr 23, 2006 12:40 pm

What's up with SS Norway now? Will SS Norway return to service or will it be scrapped?

When will SS United States be in service?

The Norway is currently moored off Port Klang, Malaysia.

On April 17, 2006 Star Cruises confirmed that they have sold the Norway to an unamed buyer. All indications are that she will be scrapped. Probably at either at Gujarati beach, Bangladesh, or somewhere in China.

The United States is currently rusting away in Philadelphia. Apparently Norwegian Cruise Lines is still showing limited interest in refurbishing her and have had some tests done to her in the last few months. The hull and engines appear to be in decent shape and the asbestos has been removed. Needless to say, it will be many years before this vessel will sail again, if ever.

I pulled the papers on the Norway--she will be scrapped. Damage beyond econonic repair. Papers for auctioning her fittings (less artwork) are to be filed in 90 days. This gives them time to field two other offers for having her (al la QM) as a floating convention center. I'm showing top offer to scrap from India...not in SE Asia.

United States is still in limbo...currnetly is listed on Historical Register but technically foreign owned (however, by a US subsidiary). She is economically challenged to be refitted, with cost estimated at US330M to refurbish/remodel.
Biggest issue besides power plants is getting her up to currents SAS regs and some major plumping issues (not all facilities had private bathrooms). Structurally, there is also an issue with the direction the NCL wanted to take her---forcing the removal and replacment of many load bearing columns to make for better public rooms....
