Car Fitness/safety Checks.

In the UK it was an annual MOT test for all cars over 3 years old, here in NZ it is every year and then every 6 months for cars over 6 years old.

When I lived in Greece (1988) IIRC it was a non-compulsory annual test? But cars had to have horns or hooters (damn, both those are rude!).

What is the system where you are?

I am not really sure since my car dealer is handling all the stuff and since I don't get the bill for it.  Silly

I believe that you can drive a new car for 3 years until you have to go to the safety check (which is usually done at your car dealer when your car is there for the usual yearly check-up). After that it is every second year I think, of course can the police stop you every time when they think that something on your car is not right.

The German authority which is doing the checks is called "TÜV" = "Technischer Überwachungsverein" = "Technical Observation Association".

There's an emissions test that older cars have to pass, although I'm not exactly sure what age the car has to be. And then there is the MTO (the Ministry of Transportation) that patrols the roads and checks for violations roadside. I got pulled over by them last year while driving a work truck and they gave me a 100.00 CDN fine for not filling out my logbook correctly, I hadn't filled out the time that I inspected the truck. But I have heard of them and the police just pulling cars off the roads if they weren't safe.
It may be too early to drink scotch... But it is NEVER too early to think about it...

Here in Georgia they used to require a yearly vehicle inspection in order to get your tag. This was dropped back in the early 1980s as there was quite a lot of inspection places that were taking bribes in exchange for a sticker.

There are currently 13 counties in Georgia (all of them in Metro Atlanta) in which vehicles less than 25 model years old (excluding the last three model years) have to have an emissions test done.

inspection and emissions every year here in PA... i guess i should get my check engine light fixed before i go to get inspected...

Here in Canberra Australia a check has to be doone when changing the registration to a new owner. Also checks can be done at random by government inspectors who will send you a letter. But it differs in each state.

All cars in California (under 30 years old) must have emissions tests done every 2 years and upon transfer of ownership. They must be done at a test only station when the car hits 8 years old (as my car is this year)

In New Jersey every 2 years. The "Inspection" is done at a public inspection station. The inspection station is a very long drive thru garage almost akin to a factory with several assembly lines with different tests being performed as the car moves thru.

First they check documentation - a valid auto insurance card - a new registration card and of course your drivers license.

They check your headlights lights are aimed correctly, all other lights work, wipers, horn.

Then the car moves down the line to this thing that raises your front end and shakes it looking for anything loose in the front end.

Then the emission test. It used to be they stuck a probe in the tailpipe at idle and that was it. Now. Now the car is put on a dynomometer (a treadmill for the driving tires) and run up to speed checking your exhaust at actual driving speed conditions.

Then they check the brakes. They drive the car unto these grates and slam the brakes. the system shows if any brake or brakes aren't stopping adequately.

And the best part is if you pass and they scrape off the old sticker and put the new one on. what a nice feeling.

In ma, an inspection sticker every year to two depending on year an an emissions test for 1982-newer cars.
Doors open, right hand side, next stop is Springfield.

Yep. However, I believe that pre 1975 vehicles are emissions exempt, and antique tagged cars (like my beloved 70 GTO) require neither test. Plus, they are tagged for life, so no annual registration renewal!

In the Yukon they really incourage people to have tests every few years, but as far as I know it isn't mandatory. If it was there goes half the cars on the road here  Wink

We have alot of nice new cars here, but we also have a good share of old beaters...

Emissions are required in Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau, I believe. But only for gasoline engines, and only for vehicles more than 2 years old. The BAFDT is exempt as it's a diesel.

Now, apparently this will improve our air quality . . .

What would really improve the air quality is to synchronize the damn traffic signals . . . . when one spends more time sitting at a stop light than one does moving, pumping out exhaust into the air, it has an affect. Can't seem to get the city of Anchorage to understand that. If the lights are programmed properly, one could drive from downtown to Dimond Blvd in about 12 minutes. Since they are not, it can take thirty. That 18 minutes more exhaust pumping out of the tailpipe . . . multiply that by a couple thousands vehicles . . . you get my point.
