This sounds like a spyware/virus. You need to grab an updated antivirus and an anti-spyware program like SpyBot S&D or Ad-Aware. There's a chance that you need to run them in Windows Safe Mode if they're unable to remove the .exe file with the associated virus/spyware.

Good luck

The program is running as a "process" in the background.

Press ctrl-alt-delete and the Task Manager window will pop up. Select the "Processes" tab. Look for something that appears to match the name of the program (it may not). If you see something that is obviously the program, attempt to stop the process 'tree'. If you are successful in stopping the process, you should be able to remove the .exe file from your desktop.

If that doesn't work, restart your computer in SAFE mode. Navigate to the desktop folder and delete the program manually.

There may be additional registry keys and .dll files that need to be removed as well.
Blank.

All excellent suggestions. Another is to do a search for the program in Google and see if there are any steps documented for it's deletion.

It would be helpful if you told us what the program is.
I hope and pray it is not Spy Axe!

You are probably going to have hard time deleting it. After you try all other suggestions, if they don't work, you probably need to change permissions in the registry file. Some spyware is wrapped that way so you cannot remove it.

Go to start, Run, type REGEDIT, press enter.

Be VERY CAREFUL what you do and be sure the program you want to delete is the one you are modifying/deleting. Registry changes will affect and possibly damage your system.

Okay, Click on the plus sign at HKEY LOCAL MACHINE. You will see subcategories open up. Go to software. Click on that plus sign. Find your program. Sometimes you really have to look for it. It could be under the company name, the program name, or something entirely different.

When you find it, right click on it. Select permissions. Change to allow you full control. After that is changed, right click and delete it.

When you are finished, repeat the process in HKEY CURRENT USER, HKEY USERS, and HKEY CURRENT CONFIG to make surfe there aren't any other files in these sections. Chances are, they are there also.
