Arsenal Off To Paris!

Wed Apr 26, 2006 5:42 am

I can't believe they survived this game. What is likely their worst performance
so far in their European campaign, Arsenal are off to Paris. Go GOONERS. It seems everyone was against our boys, as the stupid penalty call for Mari's theatrics. I mean Clichy barely touched him. 10th straight clean sheet for Champions League.

Go GOONERS!!!!!

If Arsenal play their flowing, attacking style, they'll have plenty of chances. Anyways, It will be great matchup(If it ends up being Barca), Currently the two best players in world, it will be treat to watch Ronaldhino vs. Henry.

It was a shocking performance from us, by far the worst in this seasons CL campaign. But it doesn't matter now we're in the final, Jens Lehmann has been awesome all season, and his penalty save was critical. It looks like it will be Barcelona in the final, if it is it will be a treat.....Henry vs Ronaldinho! But it doesn't really matter who's in the final, Milan or Barca.... we want to win the damn thing!  Smile

We were awful, but we won the tie fair an square. We were also magnificant against Juve and Madrid, so you cant say we haven't deserved it.

We are capable of beating Barce or Milan in the final, provided we play like we have earlier in the tournament.

Superb result.

Once again Lehmann proves himself to be one of the best in the world, and certainly above Kahn for Germany's #1 spot.

It was a crap performance by Arsenal, one of the worst i've seen. Henry was a disgrace, one lazy bugger tonight. Hleb and Ljunberg played well, they were the only two that wanted it. Good save be the big man too

As an avid Gooner myself, being in the final is great. Lets hope its AC....

Lehmann will be the starting goalkeeper for Germany at the upcoming World Cup. It was confirmed by Klinsmann a few weeks ago.

It looks like I missed that. A great decision on Klinsmann's part. With Lehmann backstopping, Germany's chances are much improved.

As a non-partisan (read: Man U!) fan watching today, I actually thought it was one of the better 0-0 games I've seen. Villareal kept the pressure on Arsenal all game long and that was the way it was likely to play out. Campbell played well and Lehmann was fantastic, especially on the penalty kick. Arsenal deserved their place in the final and when I read about who wins tomorrow seeing that ESPN US won't show the Barca-AC Milan game, I can root for Arsenal in the final...but the chips will be stacked against them. Hmm, just like Liverpool last year!

I hope Arsenal win the final.

To those who say Arsenal are a one man team, where was Henry today? Useless, he didn't do anything all game. Fantastic run at the end but by that time it made little difference.

I'd like to see Barca vs Arsenal in the final as I think AC Milan are vastly overrated and Barcelona have been superb this year.

Arsenal to win it!

In fairness to him, he didn't get much service or support from the other team members, and was consistently surrounded by yellow shirts. Unfortunately, as has been seen in the previous couple of rounds, when we get a first leg advantage, we seem to sit back in the second leg and hold on to what we've got. Doesn't make too good for the spectator, but who cares, as long as they get through.  Smile

I also thought Gilberto had an awesome game, despite that little Beckham-like kick that could have got him sent off - but the overreaction by the Villarreal player was a disgrace - blatantly trying to get Gilberto sent off.

Start to remind me of 2004, 10 straight games without a goal behind Lehmann
can they make it 11? How many games in a row in PL was it 2003-2005 without a loss?

What a game! I was literally hiding behind the sofa towards the end with my fingers in my ears. I couldn't stand the tension.  Wink

As for the game. Well, if you can't score (and boy, they had some great chances) then you don't deserve to win. They've had rotten luck in the domestic league, and now the champions league too.

And the penalty save, it got what it deserved! And somehow, I just knew he would save it. I don't know how to explain it, I just knew Lehman would save it.

On to Paris and what a great game this could be. I just hope they aren't as nervous as they were last night. And McCoist and co. were right in my opinion, Barca is a better opponent for Arsenal, they have a crap defense, but just score lots of goals. They also don't cross the ball much (except when Larson is on the field I guess) and I think that is where Arsenal is weakest.

Finally though, with Barcelona being my first team and Arsenal my second, i'm still going to be supporting Barcelona in the final. I just hope it will be a good game, preferably like last year.

49, I think.

Odd really. Arsenal had a fabulous team for years, and always fluffed it in the CL. Now, they've got a promising, but hardly outstanding side, and they go all the way through to the final.

And yes, it is set up to deny Spurs their CL place. It'll be hilarious, I have to admit. I don't know why UEFA didn't just say that if the competition winners don't qualify through the leagues they get an extra place. It seems daft to create all this uncertainty and bad feeling for the sake of one more side. Just put in one extra pre-qualifying round for a couple of teams, job done.

Arsenal were awful last night. They looked like they froze to some degree, which isn't promising for the final. I think it's a bit harsh to say Henry was poor though. The Arsenal midfield couldn't pass water last night, so I don't know how he was supposed to get on the ball any more. He made plenty of runs, they just couldn't find him.

The rules were in place before the season started, I can't see how Tottenham can win, regardless if whether it was unfair (morally) or not. It's just a  hissyfit  as far as I can see.

The reason why some clubs think it's unfair and that there may be a legal challenge is that if for example Rangers won the Champions League but finished in their current position of third Scotland would get an additional place in the Champions League and same applies to every other league apart from England, Italy and Spain, it doesn't seem quite right to me.

But we'll worry about finishing fourth first and then enjoy the scumbags humilation later. Big grin

I'm no AFC fan, but I was glad to see them go through.

Jose Marie (isn't that a girl's name?) was barely touched and went down as though he'd been shot. Dodgy penalty. If it went for you, you'd have a wry smile on your face that's for sure.

You could tell that Riquelme was bloody nervous and was going to miss the penalty. Had he looked up a second before actually kicking the ball, he would have seen that Lehmann had already began moving in the direction of the ball.
