City Of Helsinki Celebrates Tom Of Finland

Thu Apr 27, 2006 4:43 am

The Helsinki City Art Museum (The Kluuvi Gallery) opens 21th of June the exhibition of the Tom of Finland with more than 100 originals, the largest in Finland so far.
Tom of Finland (Mr Touko Laaksonen in real life)) died 15y ago in Finland, he still is perhaps the most well know Finnish artist outside Finland. At least all gay men 40+ have heard the name  Smile
The exhibition is open till 3rd of September.
Well done HEL, that's the way how to spend tax money!

Isn't Alvar Aalto the more famous artist.
But perhaps it's because I'm a) Not over 40 and b) Not gay Big grin

Cool....

There is a Tom of Finland boxed set that's a hot seller at Barnes & Noble (where I work part time).

I guess you take fame where you can get it. My mom & sis were inadvertently introduced to Tom of Finland when a BF gave me a Tom of Finland collection for Christmas. Sister thought it was cool, mom just blushed, but I did notice her stealing a few peeks when she thought no one was looking!

I had not heard of Tom of Finland before. But I had to look, because I'm going to visit Finland for the first time in June. A brief google search revealed it's not exactly the art I would put in my home though.  Wink
But then I bet there are many fans of Tom of Finland on a.net...

I still think Alvar Aalto is the most renown Finnish artist outside Finland.

In my 20+ years of experience, "Toms" are rare just about everywhere. The guy def. had a fertile imagination (among other things).

I remember being in Frankfurt with a friend years ago, in a bar called (I think) Die Stalle. There was a slide show of Tom's drawings projected on the wall. We poked fun at them and I remember saying that nobody would have a head shaped like that (slanting forward from the neck). With that a guy walked in with a head exactly the same.

We cracked up.

Die Stalle

The Stall is a Frankfort landmark! And yes, they and Tom of Finland go hand in hand - he would have felt right at home!
